Reasons for owning a dangerous game rifle in North America

The R8 Safari is built with a steel receiver and comes with a mercury-filled Kickstop tube in the stock. It's also channeled for the large 22mm Safari and fluted target barrels.
The setup with the two safari barrels would cost over $10k to replace. I've added the fluted .223 barrel for target shooting and it is very, very accurate. I don't think anyone finishes a barrel better than Blaser does. And the trigger is as crisp as my Calvin Elite. This gun never misses a range trip, it's just way too much fun.

Feeding a medium or big bore is actually the cheap part, keeping them entertained is the expensive part. It’s like large, high energy dog breed ownership. The food’s big and expensive, they need constant long walks in ever changing environments, and they follow their muzzle when they get on game and there’s little you can do to stop it; be careful what you wish for.

The going price is now $275. It's rarer than gold and almost as expensive. I picked them up for under $100 a box, a bargain I couldn't resist.

Yeah thats a good deal. The norma's i got were 245 a box after tax it was 280. The same price as my 460 weatherby ammo a box BUT only 10 rounds not 20. So reallly the 460 is half the cost of the 500j

And Ardent, nice pics as always. Im still working on getting to the mountains it wil be a while before africa, but id love to go some day. Thats why i build my 460. I read of a guy buying an mauser action for like 40$ then built it into a rifle that he said " one day ill take this to africa" and then the end of the story he did. His was a 416 rigby if i remember correctly

Hey Ardent..have you ever lost any bears in the river..
I know one year I didn't want to shoot until the bear walked away from the edge of the Bell -Irving river
Spring run off ..We probably would have lost it..
We did get it..on dry land

Here's a steel-core 650gr BMG bullet loaded for the .500 Jeffery. It has half the energy of a 50BMG and is heavy on recoil.

Close, Hoyt and I had a rodeo a few years ago on a grizzly I shot on my own tag minutes after the client took his. The boar ran into the river and died there, started quickly going downstream with only a brown patch of it above water, crowning a few inches above the surface at best. We all piled into the jet boat and went after it, and kept doing circles trying to nudge it closer to shore all the while floating quickly downstream towards places the bear would have become irrecoverable in log jams. Problem was the bear would just dip under the boat when pushed on with the bow, and I’d have to rip another circle to give it another shove. Eventually we got to shallow enough water the client surprised me by jumping out and grabbing a paw and holding it, then the three of us got it ashore. For all their roundness they roll worse than you’d expect.

Nice brybenn, the Baikal actually surprised me with its value. It’s a solid feeling gun that handles better than I expected. Nice seeing one working.

The Baikal I had struck me (literally) as being too light. Meaningful loads that weren’t an issue in a Marlin GG or Ruger No. 1 were simply unpleasant in the Baikal.

That 43 Express is no slouch! How is the brass situation?

i really like playing around with 43 mauser and i started playing around with stronger actions then the 71/84, so i wanted to run the pressures up a bit but didnt want to ruin my 43 mauser brass (costs the same as 460 weatherby) so after doing a little measuring and looking at random ammo i had i figured the 375HH case family would be perfect, i expanded the neck to .446, ran them through the 43 mauser dies and then trimmed to 62mm long, load them with about 56gr H4895

here is a thread on it

Fair point, the .30-06 version I’d give a go as a camp gun, affordable enough to just spray paint for weather resistance.

Thank you, that pic over the river with the rifle might just be my favorite place in the world, and there’s some particular special things about that spot.
