I have been reading some of the threads on here about barrels and feel that many people believe that a barrel is made of a very hard material and in fact all barrels are made from reasonable soft material.
Ron Smith and myself made a barrel out of a piece of rebar which was just for a joke but it turned out to work very well. I used it at Raton New Mexico and did fairly well with it in the competition. I was surprised to see an article published in March issue of Precision Shooting journal.
But I was even more surprised by the phone calls and emails wondering about it blowing up. And of course common sense must be used considering pressures, but if barrels were made of very hard material they would be very brittle and impossible to machine, is probably the simplest way of explaining it.
Ive had a lot of fun with this target gun at shows and in competitions and it has been something Ive wanted to do for many years. And thanks to my good friend Ron who sometimes "challenges my ideas" happened to have a weak moment and agree to give it a try.

Got pictures? I'm curious as to what size of rebar you used and what it is chambered in.

Did you leave the exterior of the re-bar as is or did you turn it down to a contour?

Al Peterson told me he used old car axles, Model T i think when he started making barrels, don`t know what year he fired up his barrel machine. He built his own rifleing machine by the way, i know the guy that bought it but i don`t think he`s using it.

As for material, don't confuse hardness with toughness or strength. A steel doesn't have to be hard to be strong.

I like how the scope bases are held on with bubblegum.... ;) :D

That's awesome...here's your pictures

If a barrel were made out of a very hard material it mould most likely crack or shatter. Softer materials can still be very strong but able to withstand shock better than hard materials.

Yost action

The action I used was made by a fellow who lived in Wisconsin whose name was Ed Yost. He was a avid single shot shooter and built what he believed to be the perfect action. It has a very quick lock time and the action is surprisingly simple with only a few moving parts and only one spring in it. I was fortunate enough to get one of his actions a few years ago. He only built about 20 before his death in 1990.
There was a good story on the net about him and his work just Google

That's the coolest fluting job I've seen in a while! ;)

I'd even pay for one of those for a 10/22 - that would turn some heads at the range!
