First off, are you really talking about rebarreling or rechambering???
The latter really limits your options. Tradex has some New old stock milsurp 6.5x55 barrels that are steals at the price they are asking.
Now, I have seen these actions converted to some pretty hot cartridges. The nice thing about them is they have relatively long mag wells and will accept most standard cases that are approximately the same size as the 30-06. The 7-08 would be a good option. I have one that was rebarreled to 6mm Remington and had a #### on opening kit and after market trigger installed. One of my more accurate rifles.
A friend has one chambered in 257 Roberts with a 1-9 twist rate and loves it. I have seen lots of these lovely actions converted to some nice wildcat cartridges as well. I saw one last fall converted to a 7.62x39. The magazine had a block installed and the follower and spring were after market made. Nice little rifle.
Use your imagination. Anything is possible with standard length cases as well as lots of time and money.
