Thinking on getting my 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser rebarreled because I have two off them. What would be a good caliber to go with. Kinda like those odd ball calibers
Thanks

First off, are you really talking about rebarreling or rechambering???

The latter really limits your options. Tradex has some New old stock milsurp 6.5x55 barrels that are steals at the price they are asking.

Now, I have seen these actions converted to some pretty hot cartridges. The nice thing about them is they have relatively long mag wells and will accept most standard cases that are approximately the same size as the 30-06. The 7-08 would be a good option. I have one that was rebarreled to 6mm Remington and had a #### on opening kit and after market trigger installed. One of my more accurate rifles.

A friend has one chambered in 257 Roberts with a 1-9 twist rate and loves it. I have seen lots of these lovely actions converted to some nice wildcat cartridges as well. I saw one last fall converted to a 7.62x39. The magazine had a block installed and the follower and spring were after market made. Nice little rifle.

Use your imagination. Anything is possible with standard length cases as well as lots of time and money.

I can't see why you wouldn't want to stick with the 6.5x55?? If you want different, get a custom reamer and go with a almost straight wall, 35 degree shoulder 6.5x55!

Kimber at one time sold sporters made on 96 actions and stopped after a few blowup incidents.A 96 is not a 98 and never will be.My son and I have shot everything from fox to moose with the 6.5x55 and 140gr Partitions no need to upgrade.Tough as elk are they also wilt.Love the round..........Harold

it doesn't come much better for a factory round than a 6.5x55 and the sweeds are very accurate guns I can think of nothing that would be any better. I to have shot everything from magpie to moose with the 140s and at one time the factory 160 imperial

Well guys I think you got me convinced to keep it the way it is. Guess it won't hurt to have that 4th spare deer rifle right
Thanks for all the info

well for the 'next' time you are pondering this ... what about a 358W using the lower starting loads..

The factory sold them in 30-06 and 9.3x62. They're stronger than you think, assuming good condition. - dan

a CGN member who couldnt possibly remember all the firearms he has owned at one point or another ... had a wonderful little model 96 in 358W - I believe it was about a 20 inch barrel ... and I recall it was one the nicest little rifles I have seen .. he used it for deer hunting. They certainly seem to be pretty strong and when done up as a 'carbine' I think they are tough to beat.
