Rebuild norc 1911 or buy new gun?

so it shoots 6 inch groups at 25 yards and wont feed anything but hardball? Swell! USGI 1911 are for collecting, not serious shooting. And if they shoot much better then that, they've been worked on, and not shot much, as USGI slides are un hardened as a war expedient to production. They guys looking for a shooter...not a collection piece. As far as new colts go, i steer folk in the store away from them, as of the 4 sold in the last 6 months, 3 have came back with mechanical failure...they do look pretty though.

Laugh2 Laugh2 serious shooting from a 1911 haha

Lol all kinds of comedians in this post. I went to a few local gun shops to see what was available and what they felt like. The Sig tac ops caught my eye, so did a couple Remington's. the fella at Barton's tried to sell me on a ruger but he wasn't sure when the next one would come in. So I started just having a look higher up in the price range, a little look wouldn't hurt I told myself. I checked a few kimbers but when he put a SW1911TA in my hands I knew I was in trouble. It's a gorgeous gun and it felt right. A little pricey but unless anyone here makes an argument to stop me, then I'm gonna go buy it tomorrow morning.

No argument here . S&W 1911 is a very nice option .

A lot of new 1911's look terrific, that doesn't mean that they'll work properly in the long run. You should read Hilton Yam's appraisal of 1911's for duty use. Some very savvy gun people build 1911's using Norc frames and slides - for the price you'd spend on a new gun, you can have a skilled pistol smith build you a gun that will work and continue to work and be accurate for many years. Your choice. Either way, it'll still be a 1911 - it won't be a Glock, an M&P or a Sig.

Okay so I have an issue with my norinco 1911. I more or less have the problem figured out. But until its fixed the gun is useless. Should I take this opportunity to rebuild it with a new barrel? Or slide it in the back of the safe and buy something new?

I've always wanted to build a 1911 but the parts availability in Canada sucks.
The wife said it might be easier to just buy a new one and I hate passing up on a new gun when the wife suggests it!

If I do buy new, any suggestions( NOT norinco)?
If I rebuild, any one have leads on parts sources other than Brownells?

Smart man :D

I actually just read that right before I saw your post. Good info. I really don't have anything against norincos. The barrel in mine was not fit properly so the gun doesn't work. A few people have suggested norc replacement parts, but I don't want to spend more money just to get me back to square one.

My thinking is that if I'm spending money then I should at least upgrade either parts or the whole gun. Or both. As it sits right now I might do both. That article DID suggest having a back up 1911.:)

Picked up my new smith and Wesson 1911TA. Gave it a once over cleaning and found that it fit into blade teck holster even though it has a light rail on it. It looks cool. Feels great. And hopefully I get to test it in the next few days.

As for the norc..... Well I'm not sure if I should just sell it. Or rebuild it into something better now that its Not my only gun. Basically back to square one, but I have a new 1911. Can't complain about that.

Is the Norc a 9mm or a 45? I have several of both. The 45s were all accurate right out of the box, but most needed a trigger job.

My older model Norc 9mms were accurate. I bought three of the latest batch, and all shot huge vertical groups at 20 yards.

This was diagnosed as the barrel not being tight when locked up. The chamber end had some wiggle. I bought a cheap ($50) drop in barrel and the pistol immediately shot the way it should. I shoot lead round nose (135gr) and have no feeding issues.

Ganderite, the 9mm norc you had, was it one with the reduced diamter 9mm barrel? The one i have has a small diameter 9mm barrel, and i've been playing with the idea of replacing it as you did. Did you have to fit a new bushing?

The barrel diameter was the same as the 45 diameter. if you change the barrel, you might need a matching size bushing.

For another big group new 9mm, I changed it over to 7.62x25. All it needed was a new barrel and bushing. That shoots very, very well, although I use mostly handloads in it. Factory milsurp needs the bullets pushed a bit deeper so they will fit the 38 Super mag.

I've seen exactly one 1911 factory chambered in 30 parabellum.....apparently quite rare....I like your idea.....though i will not be handloading if i try it...i've got too many weird rounds to load to mess about with bottle neck handguns :)
