reccomend me a .300 mag....

.300 Win Mag

I've had a tangsafety Ruger 77 with the 24" barrel. Great shooter.

Currently, have a Browning A-bolt composite stalker with 26" barrel.

Both shot extremely well with 70 grain IMR 4350 behind a good quality 180 gr JHP bullet.

NAA.

Browning A-bolt w/BOSS...but its the first 300WM I ve owned. There are mixed reviews on it but I clover leaf at 150 yds, it feels good, does't kick too hard, but the Boss is loud

Amazing to me how often people say these crazy things:

- don't buy detach mags cause you will lose it / forget to bring it, and not be able to hunt
- get such and such a caliber because it's so common to find or you can borrow from someone in case you forget to bring some

Good grief people! How many times has this actually happened to anyone? Hands up! 'Fess up!
I have never lost a mag or forgot to bring ammo..... ever!

I have had 2 clients loose mags while hunting.

Ever have a suitcase not show up? I know that I have. I also spoke to a guy last week that didn't have his suitcase show up in Zimbabwe so he was SOL with his 400 Jeffrey and his boy no better off with his 375 Taylor. That's why it's always nice to have a common caliber.

And yes, you can handload a 300 down to 2800 fps with a 180 gr bullet. But why? If you want to shoot a 30-06 then buy a 30-06. personally I don't think someone who has what appears to me to be limited firearms experience should be encouraged to try his hand at cooking up reduced velocity loads for a 300 WM, just to say that he has a "magnum".

I still maintain that a 30-06 would be better, but the advice to wander down to the gunstore and try a few on for size is solid advice.

I have a Remington 700 XCR in the .300WM and I love it. Only thing I would change about it is the internal magazine. Great concept but if a moose comes out on the road ahead of you makes it a little harder to load quickly

Well said.

And quite often those unprepared people that forgot their ammunition go hunting with ammunition that they haven't even fired in their gun,and and a result, they don't know where the point of impact is with the borrowed ammunition.

A few inches left or right won't make a difference at normal distances.

What's a normal distance, because I believe the location where the animal is shot on, is where it should hit the ground and stay. Like you say an inch or two isn't a whole lot, but thinking, I owed it to the prey to make the best shot I can, in practice and on the hunt.

well thanks everyone for the great replies i think im going to look into the tikka t3 in .300 mag....most lilely next time im down south....

also i totally agree a .30-06 would be a better gun for the 2 things i listed but like i said i want a magnum for now and plan to build up a nice .270 as my next rifle for long range deer!;)

Anybody pick up the 2009 Special Hunting Issue of Outdoor Canada? It seems like every outfitter they sent a questionaire to chose the 300 win mag above all the others for Mule deer, Moose, Elk, Sheep and mountain goat. That said, the 30/06 and 7mm rem mag were always close seconds. I shoot a 300 winny in a Rem 700 and love hunting with it......I mean you don't want to shoot it all day at the range but I'm not worried about distant shots or takedown energy with it either.

Yeah, but they picked the 30-06 as #1 overall and besides a win mag on a mule deer

Meh...if you are handloading you might as well go for the 300 ultramag. It does everything the 300 winmag can do, and tons more that it can't :)

Just curious, but exactly what can you do with your 300 Ultra that I can't with my 300 Win?

so.... let me get this strait...a .30-06 will do everything you need, but you want a magnum, so you're going to get one, in a notoriously hard-recoiling rifle... then step down in power for longer range deer?

HUH?

or a .308win. he's in ontario, yes?

This:
150 gr. @ 3550 FPS :D
220 gr. @ 2990 FPS :D

Granted, for most applications a 300 win or even a 308 will suffice....but there ARE many things a 300 RUM or it's next door neighbour the 30/378 W can do that your winmag just can't....whether that be throwing heavy bullets at high velocity (My RUM packs more velocity/energy at 300 yards than an '06 does at the muzzle) or setting up a FLAT long range cartridge (Loaded with 160's, the gun can pretty mutch match a 22/250 trajectory wise...and can mimic the 25/06 with heavier bullets than that!)

So in short: At 400 yards or less, not a huge advantage other than being able to throw way heavier bullets than the win...but when you are stretching out past 400, that's where the rifle shines.

At my old moose camp we had a "range" set up in an old cut. Hitting (and decimating) 1 gallon water jugs at 789 lazered yards with 180 sirroco's was almost too easy.

What's funny about the whole "You are wasting powder/money with a RUM" crowd is that most of the naysayers shoot a 300 win....yet when you point out that their logic should apply to their own choice and ask them why they aren't shooting an '06 (after all, they are wasting powder/money with a winmag) there is all of a sudden a whole s**tload of reasons why the winmag is better ;)

The 300 RUM is to the Winmag what the Winmag is to the '06...it's a bigger, more powerful cartridge that shoots flatter, reaches further, hit's harder, and allows the use of heavier bullets without sacrificing velocity....do we need it? Most times no. Does it matter? Not at all. If we were only allowed to have what we "need", every gun would be chambered in 30/30 and .303

Answer your question? :D
