Recent Blow-up of a Sako 85

Looks like the bolt was locked up fine, the receiver ring let go in a catastrophic fashion.
There was a guy in BC that was talked about here not too long ago, he'd been kicked out of 3 ranges or something so far for blowing rifles up...wonder if it's the same dude?

i think he is or was a member here as well ...

That piece of brass looks like it was in the mag when she blew, dented from above

I was thinking along that line, what if ammo in mag blow, round in the barrel was normal, strange.
But from what I read, quickly, sound like all ammo accounted for?
Blocked barrel and blew the bolt back? Need a coffee.
That fellow is damn lucky.

This doesn’t compute. Anything resulting in overpressure will show on the brass, and this casing does not show it. The primer will flatten or smear. I’ve done it to many primers myself. The case head would be the second to show signs. It would expand and the primer pocket would also enlarge and the primer would fall out.

Then we get the fact that the deflagration or “explosion” is contained within the casing. How can such a volume of gas escape the chamber without rupturing the case?

I thing the previous round fractured the locking lugs. This round basically blew the bolt back without resistance. The gasses escaped the mouth as the boot was already pushed back out of battery by the time pressure was really on the rise.

IMO the bolt was incorrectly hardened like glass. Previous round or rounds Propagated cracks in the bolt, and this one finally fishier it all off, before it was able to reach full pressure thanks to blowout back out of battery and venting the gasses. Hense barrel appears ok. Remeber those lugs engage the barrel not the receiver.

Very glad to hear the guy is ok. I find these posts very interesting. It's very concerning that these rifles have had issues in the past. Not a good look for sako. Especially because they are a "high end" rifle manufacturer.

To hear about someone getting banned from ranges for blowing up rifles is pretty wild. He must be quite the chemist.

Not the first large brand to have a batch of rifles blow up. I remember Browning had a bunch around 20 years ago where the barrels exploded and the barrel peeled back like petals, having split at each groove in the barrel. Savage had its 10MLii complaints as well.

Just provide a link to the other thread then... If its not permitted you'll get told as much by a Mod, but I HIGHLY doubt there would be an issue with linking to another thread on another forum. The only time I've seen hotlinking being an issue is when hotlinking to a product for sale on a non-sponsor website.

Which seems petty of them.

Oh, ohhhh!

I guess I should get rid of my two large bore Sako 85's because some people on here just don't like them,,,,,,, ummmmmm, not a chance in hell!
