Rechamber 243 to 6mm Rem because I'm odd

I've done it on a couple Rem 700 243 Varmint barrels. I take the factory thread right off.

This is the best way to do it. /\

If you have a standard weight bbl, you may not get away with it.

Take off Varmint barrels, already chambered for the 6mm Rem or 243 can be had for as little as $150, if you do a bit of searching. One should screw right into your receiver and the other, if it's chambered for the 243 can easily have the tenon removed and recut.

As far as feeding, not a problem.

One thing you should realize, before going this route is that with 100 grain bullets, there will be little to no velocity gain over the 243

243 cases are much easier to locate.

You don't mention the twist rate of your present 243 barrel.

Early 6mm Remington barrels had 1-12 twist rates and seldom stabilize a bullet heavier than 100 grains. Later 6mm Rem barrels have 1-9 twist rates.

Most 243 Rem barrels have a 1-10 twist rate which should stabilize the heavy 6mm bullets.

All factory barrels marked 6mm Remington have the 9 twist barrels and stabilize 100 grain bullets with no problems.

The factory barrels marked .244 Remington were 1 in 12 twist barrels and will not stabilize 100 grain pointed bullets. 95 grain Nosler Partitions pushed fast usually work.

No difference in the chambers or cartridges - just the twists.

Use a long action. I have had a few 700's in 6mm in short actions. Can't seat the bullets very long and still fit in the magazine. It really is a long action cartridge. I am building a 6mmAI on a LA.

The 700 SA really is short. But a Ruger SA will fit the 6mm easily.

Yes or use a Tikka T3 action with a long bolt stop and long mags - RJ

It's actually a medium action cartridge, based off of the 7x57. As is the 257 Roberts. - dan

Yea but ALL 6mm rem are on short action and that’s why the 6 Creemoor is the King of Short actions RJ

Not all. PH sold 6mm rem's on commercial Mauser actions, a perfect fit for the cartridge. Not uncommon in Europe, back in the day. And a shortened 6 Rem is a 243. How is a 6 CM an advantage over that? - dan

Yup, my bad, my barrel is marked 244 Remington, so is my RCBS die set.

True Dan the PH s were a std lenght (270-30-06) and are perfect for a 6 MM Rem - 6 mm CM works out BETTER is a short action for COAL ! jmo RJ

YUP it is and EVEN BETTER for building a 240 WBEE with a 7.5 or 8 twist barrel ! jmo RJ

Tried the bee long ago. In the 80's. Based on that experience I built a 240 Gibbs, with a Ron Smith gain twist barrel. Brass was way easier to get, and much, much cheaper. It's the second fastest 6mm I've had. The 6mm Mach IV was the fastest, but at the time it was quite difficult to get powder slow enough for it to work well. Wouldn't be as difficult now with all the powders oriented to overboard cartridges on the market available. Fun times though. I still have the Gibbs, sold the bee and rebarreled the mach IV. - dan

I don't disagree. Most short action receivers are best suited to the 223 family of cartridges and similar. But they can be made to work with longer, and until the heavy for caliber craze worked fine. - dan
