Recommend hunting rifle 30-06

Do a search on Tradex... any number of 30-06 hunting rifles will fit the fill, are competively priced, and better than anything new on the market in the same price range (or higher)

I consider these to be the best deal around these days. I'm biased; this is what I bought. $665 at Lebaron in 30-06. Walnut stock is awesome. Trigger is beautiful - incredibly crisp with no over travel or creep. The quality is superb with FN making these. Shoots real nicely.

You guys have hit the nail on the head here. It's about five times the rifle at not even twice the price.

Also, hoytcannon is very right about the "American" and all the those in the class. Pretty sad they called it "The American", but that's where America is going for real I suppose.

Ive been shopping around so far ive narrowed it down to a few but i should add i would like a detachable magazine too so ive been leaning toward a tikka t3 lite

There are many good entry level bolt action guns in the market, ranging in price from $300 (Stevens 200) to $900 (Model 70). This is one of the most competitive segments of the market, so every manufacturer has to have a strong presence here. Hence, your Dollar goes much further than the more specialized market. Kind of like family sedan car market. Just pick one of the many named above which fits you and your bank account better and enjoy it.

No love here for T/C Venture? They are very well built, shoot MOA,nice trigger,5R rifling,DBM mag and cheap for what they really are.
They are above Axis,Ruger Americain,etc...

I am just payihg off a Browning Xbolt 30-06 Hunter series. If it shoots anything like the Xbolt 308 I bought last fall then it will be a joy to shoot. Its pillar bedded, floated, rotary mag, tang safety, excellent adjustable trigger and allows me to unload with the safety on. They also make pretty much any cal available in left hand which is really rare for a gunmaker. May be match barrels too. Got a target in the basement posted at 200m with one of my hadloads 3 bullets touching. Handloads of course but freaked me none the less. Slick acton too. Nice upgrade from my Ruger 77. As well its a Miroku gun. Im sold. I like the Jap guns.

The Kurgan gives very good advice. Many of us here have bought rifles from TradeEx (including me) and, from what I have observed, everyone has been VERY pleased with their purchases.

I picked up a savage 111 with a scope and accutrigger in 300 win at xmas for $450. It shoots great. The stock sucks, but everything else on the rifle is great. Personally, for hunting, the accutrigger is great. A really nice light pull that can't fire by jarring. Also, I used to have a sako a7, and I found it to be real accurate. But when sighting it in, I was never as confident as it would begin to 'walk' on me really quick. I don't find that the savage rifles walk nearly as much. And yes, I let my barrels cool in between strings.

I bought a boyd's laminate thumbhole stock for my savage for $100.

The Weatherby Vanguard is worthy of your curiosity.
But, go to a gun shop and handle as many as you can for fit, feel and comfort.
You will be able to determine how the weight and balance is as well.
The Vanguard is a bit heavier ok alot heavier than a Tika T-3, and that is about all
others can give for advice when it comes to comparing weight and how it may affect you.
Tight Groups,
Rob

I would be happy to sell you mine. Browning A-bolt with boss and B-L elite 3000. High gloss stock, blue. This a great gun. I just got an x-bolt in 30-06. $700

About 2/3rds of the posts in this thread are fuddy opinions.

I'll say this much though, the Ruger American has a nicer trigger than the Axis, and the detach magazine seems more durable.

I would suggest you try on all the rifles you are considering and maybe a few you have not considered and pick the one that you like best.

As you can see from all the above comments, guys can make a good case for any rifle they like. With the quality and accuracy of rifles off the shelf today, the question really should be "which one fits you best and gives you the confidence to shoot it well?".

PS. Considering your budget I would suggest saving an extra $100 to buy a new scope and a gently used Remington 700

Beware friend: The T3 Lite is very light! In .30-06 it will hunt fine, but it will be no fun to shoot. If you like the Tikka, consider the Hunter model which has walnut and will be friendlier on your shoulder. BTW, I owned a T3 Lite and it was a great rifle, probably the smoothest action I have cycled. But it kicked like a mule and I wasn't big on the plastic mag.

Did your plastic mag ever fail? or rust?

This is one of my pet peeves when it comes to fuddery. Look at pmags, glock mags, 10/22 mags, they're all plastic with some metal in them. Even all plastic magazines (and trigger guards) are just as durable as metal and more resilient to the weather. They're cheaper to make and replace, and they will not rust.

That is true on the rusting but my neighbour left his t3 all plastic mag on the dash of his truck in the hot summer guess what. It not longer feeds as it deformed in the sun and a new mag is crazy spendy.

The xbolt plastic rotary mags seem to be indestructible. I have a few and the work flawlessly, even the one that was in the pack I ran over last fall. The mag was crushed hard enough by the tire to cut right through the heavy canvas bag, but never took any damage!
