my vote goes also for Weatherby Vanguard Sporter 2 S/S
* I'm very happy with this low priced top rifle... and it's accurate like a Wby MK V
My Vanguards out-shoot my Mark Vs for the most part.

I consider these to be the best deal around these days. I'm biased; this is what I bought. $665 at Lebaron in 30-06. Walnut stock is awesome. Trigger is beautiful - incredibly crisp with no over travel or creep. The quality is superb with FN making these. Shoots real nicely.
Do a search on Tradex... any number of 30-06 hunting rifles will fit the fill, are competively priced, and better than anything new on the market in the same price range (or higher)
Ive been shopping around so far ive narrowed it down to a few but i should add i would like a detachable magazine too so ive been leaning toward a tikka t3 lite
Did your plastic mag ever fail? or rust?
This is one of my pet peeves when it comes to fuddery. Look at pmags, glock mags, 10/22 mags, they're all plastic with some metal in them. Even all plastic magazines (and trigger guards) are just as durable as metal and more resilient to the weather. They're cheaper to make and replace, and they will not rust.
Ah, spoken like a true fudd, elmer fudd no less.About 2/3rds of the posts in this thread are fuddy opinions.
I'll say this much though, the Ruger American has a nicer trigger than the Axis, and the detach magazine seems more durable.
