Recommend me a 45-70.

I've had three different modern 45-70's, a Marlin 1895, a Winchester Model 86 Extra Light, and a Browning Model 86 saddle ring carbine. They are all great guns, but the best, and the only one I've kept, is the Browning. The action is designed like the original (half ####, no rebounding hammer, no tang safety). It is also very strong for top end loads, but the steel buttplate will knock you into next Wednesday with heavy loads. Here's a pic ...

The Browning '86 carbine is a beautiful rifle.
When my Dear Wife found out about them, she bought me one for a gift.... its a treasured keeper.
And you are absolutely right, it does bite at both ends !

For something that's short, durable and handy, I went with a Marlin 1895GS.

The down side, to my experience, is the straight stock design. With the recoil from top end loads using heavier bullets,it can be a little hard on the fingers.

For 'playing' with cast loads, some off hand and long range shooting, a buddy lent me his Pedersoli Sharps. I have one on my 'must get' list.

Just Got a Chiappa 1886, Its very nice and recoil is no issue as it is fairly heavy.

My 1895 Marlin - 2006 New Haven (JM stamped) is a beauty. Smooth, shoots true and very accurate.

I love my Ruger #1.great to load for as you can load as hot as you can handle.
Fast handling due to the short breech.I use peep sights to speed it up even more.
I can't think of a better platform for the 45/70.

I can second the 1895GS. I love mine. Although I'm on the lookout for a 1895 cowboy. I Wouldn't trade my GS for walking through the bush, but I would love to have that long octagon barrel for slinging slow heavy lead as far as my eyes can see.

What I don nt like is the leaver kik my fingers down due of the reacoil , I spoke abouth it and the answer I had ;

This is normal .... and by this mouvement it help you to engage the second round ... hummm

maybe in a situation of hunting need to shoot fast mayby but at the shooting range it is not funn at all

What's really cool is seeing the little dust cloud it kicks up at those long ranges too (with the binoculars!)

Love my pre-Remlin XLR, have a set of DRC Ghost Rings sights on it and a nice black leather sling with a suede pad made by Dingo from Australia. Use reloads and it's one of my favourite moose and deer rifles.

The Marlin 1895 SDT that is listed on the EE, certainly looks good. In fact it looks so good, I already have a spot in my gun lockup reserved for it.

Wow, no one on the first page recommending the H&R or NEF...there's hope for us after all!

I'd tell you to go with an 1885 (mine is a Browning) or a #1S (haven't got one of those...probably should). I have an older 1895CB as well as an original Remington Rolling Block. Just take precautions to not feed skookum loads to weaker actions.
