I've had three different modern 45-70's, a Marlin 1895, a Winchester Model 86 Extra Light, and a Browning Model 86 saddle ring carbine. They are all great guns, but the best, and the only one I've kept, is the Browning. The action is designed like the original (half ####, no rebounding hammer, no tang safety). It is also very strong for top end loads, but the steel buttplate will knock you into next Wednesday with heavy loads. Here's a pic ...
