Recommend me a good, budget, antique status rifle for my first long gun?

This little 75 cal black powder is very much a fun thing to shoot, Patch your balls and it certainly is accurate. I use a 10 gauge wad for a sabot and have gotten good results.
This is an 1850+- musket and it came with a new stock and the original stock- kit and kaboodle for under $400.00.

This is but one example of a cheap antique that is only going to increase in value and give you years of fun, maybe leave it to your daughter.

You are limiting yourself to modern flint locks that are nothing but throw away toys. Get real- go black.

SR - Sporting RIFLE.

It is emphatically NOT a pistol cartridge powder.

What does a Trapdoor have that a Mauser does NOT have? Apart from being 8 or 10 or 20 times the price, that is? Trapdoor is generally a .45-70-405.

Mauser is a .446-77-386. It will DO anything the Trapdoor will do. They are on the EE at 100 and up. A friend got one at a gun show last weekend, $75. Genuine Karabiner 1871, made at Spandau. Needs a LITTLE work but that is part of the fun.

You DID say "BUDGET".

Do have fun.

With respect?

Price/availability of brass and ease of reloading.

And I've seen .45-70 Trapdoors for $800...it just takes patience.
