Recommend me a Semi Auto 22

I really like these rifles too, just finished slicking and refinishing mine. Everyone who shoots it now really likes it, they just feel different from the rest of the 22s out there.

But the OP can fit a new Miroku-production Browning SA22 into his budget, lucky guy! Or a nice old Belgian made version, which would probably be my choice...

Where are the Norinco clones available at $179 currently?

I don't think they are in stock but they pop up on the EE every couple months for about $200 shipped.... a new in the oil one sold a couple days ago.

There are some Norc clones of a SA22 on another site starting with G and ending with st. One real cheap that I would bet the feed problem is just the mag tube is damaged where it screws into the receiver but I don't need another one to buy it to find out.

That's where you would be wrong.

The biggest appeal of the Ruger 10/22 used to be the availability and reliability of its 25 round magazines. This is what made the rifle so popular. The only other rifles that had magazines with that capacity was the Marlin 795 and the Remington 597. The 795 was far better than the 597, but both lacked after market support which was the second reason Ruger was more popular.

Marlin Model 60s are cool, but since Marlin has sold to Ruger we may never see a Model 60 again. The stainless barrel with laminate stock is an awesome little rifle, I'd buy one, but as of now they are unavailable. So strike it off the list.

The Browning SA22 looks cool and maybe the only tube fed style semi auto 22 in production.

I do prefer wood stocks on certain rifles over plastic anyday.

I would disagree with the assessment that that was the only reason the 10/22 was popular, though it may have been a selling feature for some. Gotta remember, the mags came AFTER the rifle was already popular, as they did for the other rifles, as their numbers came up to the point that the makers thought it worth their while!

I bought mine in the early eighties, fully intending to Barbie Doll it to the ends of my bank account. So far, the 'big spend' has been a used $3 stock from a Sally Ann store in Victoria, artfully stippled by someone's dog... I originally bought that with intents to hog out the fore end for a fat barrel, but never got around to it... And since it just works, and I need not worry about dings and scratches, so it remains...

It's been dead nuts reliable and is my go-to for gopher patch and farm 'issues'. Enough first round hits on 100 yard gophers, to think there is nothing wrong with the barrel, too.
Not, maybe everyone's experience, but mine.

For a classic looking adult size rifle, the Winchester 490 would like be my first pick.

I have a bunch of experience with both the Browning SA22 and the Norc copies. They carry very easy, they are light and handy, and a great walking around gun.

For whatever reason, the Marlin and Mossberg guns never really drew in my eye, so I never much bothered. if you can stand to look at them, they may be an option.

It's sorta like a Beauty Contest. They all look pretty good, but you gotta pick the one that looks best to YOU!

This is probably the most common comment you'll hear about the SA22, and I couldn't agree more! It is subjective and maybe they don't work for everyone, but there is some magic going on with this design. And the Brownings are oh so easy on the eyes...

At the moment there is simply no other long gun that I would rather carry in hand or raise to my shoulder. Some centerfire leverguns come very close for me, but for the rimfire option there is no comparison.

I did see this.
I think the 20 round magazine will be a hot seller for the Savage 64.

I've looked at this ad a couple times.

It looks like a nice unit, my issue is that I would prefer a Model 60 with a laminate or wood stock. I'm old school like that.

How about a rifle 100% made in Canada by Canadians?

We even have a sub $1000 dollar model with a sub moa guarantee

I just received one of these yesterday. All I can say is WOW. If you like really well made, quality, this is what you want. The fit and feel is outstanding, and it looks better in person.

If it shoots as good as advertised I don't see any downside.

I mounted a Bushnell 4500 1x4 with tally rings. Will try to get to the range over the next few days, if the weather cooperates.

Have you tried the Savage A22 line?

I have a Mark II that punches above it's weight so last year decided to take a chance on the A22.
Picked up a basic synthetic model with 20" barrel, nothing special. Cost me about $350ish. Bought some extra mags around $40 apiece.
I've run a couple thousand rounds through this thing, mostly Rimfire Precision and CMP style shooting.
Accuracy, ergonomics and function are excellent in this gun.

Couple design choices about the 10/22 that always bugged me and the A22 addresses them all:
Dead easy (tool-less) bolt removal and access to the chamber and barrel for cleaning.
A simple bolt lock and a release that works like it should!
Two action screws vs one on the 10/22.
Barrel nut vs v-block.

Protruding single-stack mags always get in the way of my support hand so the flush-fit rotary mags are a huge feature for me. I've read about people having problems with the mags: they don't feed or they're hard to load. I don't get it - I have 4 or 5 of the 10s and a 25 and none have given me any trouble. Easy to take apart for cleaning. And unlike the 10/22, hi-cap mags are not verboten.

The trigger could be better. It's a bit heavier than I'd like even adjusted down to its lowest setting. It breaks clean but that Accutrigger blade makes for a very long reset.

Off the bench at 50 yds and with SK standard, 10 rounds will make a most satisfying single ragged hole.

All-in-all, this gun is great value. I liked it so much I bought the Precision model with the MDT chassis.

I agree with Most of the above post Except for the accuracy. I have the 'basic' with standard barrel and it may just be the ammo I've tried - Fed Champion 40gRNL, SK FlatNose, Fed Automatch, Herters HV-HP - or the temps around here, no better than 10*C since Oct. Only the SK-FN was really good and then just around 1" of 5-shots, No ragged hole but I don't do 10s. My 6-year old Sav-64 does just as well for less than half the cost.
I cleaned all of the crap-debris 'bits' and OEM lube and re-lubed with ptfe, which helped the pull a bit, but the last 'mod' was heating the T-spring red-hot and cooling slowly. This reduced tension and got the pull down to about 2.3#. I also got a 'Varmint spring' from USA from a friend (Gunshack doesn't ship to CAN) and that also got the pull down to about 2.2#, so I left it in. 'Six of one . . . '.
The precision in a chassis may be better than the 'original' but you're getting into the price of 'better' rifles like CZ etc.
BTW I have a B22 that does 1/2" or better @ 50 so I know what the 'new' Savages can do.
Hope yours keeps doing you right ;-)

Yes, I've been reading your trigger mod threads with great interest. Might have to try out that spring heating technique.

Just to be clear: it wasn't a single .22" hole that all 10 rounds went through but rather they ended up punching out roughly the same spot on the target. End result was a ragged ~1/2" void in the paper.

So far my pencil barreled A22 in Boyd’s At One stock shooting mini mags is more accurate than my heavy barrelled Mark II with either the mini mags or the Winchester stuff I have.

Triggers wise I don’t notice any major difference between the two. Both break super nice. Weight I don’t have way to measure but both feel good to me.

Bubba Pull Gage

I don't have a 'Trigger pull gage' per se (can't justify $100 for a good one for 8-9 rifles :p), I have a copper wire 'hook' that I put on the trigger vertically so it pulls in a 'proper direction', attach a small plastic bag and add cat-food cans to the bag until trigger breaks. Then remove ONE can and add small weights like nuts and bolts until it breaks again. Then I take that product and weigh it with a Digital Luggage scale. I've done this with all my rifles and the only one over 2.5# is the SKS at 4.5 #. My S-64 is at 2.5 and my 1962 Rem-722 in .308 runs 2.2# with the Walker trigger (always careful of A-D, but Safety-lever and bump-tested every outing b4 loading). ALL Rifles have T-mods to varying degrees except the Rem, which was adjusted by a gunsmith B4 I bought it. All started at 4-5# (or more-A22) OEM and with the reductions I'm able to get much more stable holds. This allows more accuracy when using 24X scopes on my 22s.
I don't shoot 'competition', just my own challenges. Not 'sub-1/2" but 'close'.

Thanks for all the input guys.

I ended up going with a Marlin Model 60. Circa 2013. Apparently it was never fired, it came in the original box, with original packaging, with the manual and original warranty slip. I took it apart and cleaned it, and from I could tell it appears to have never been fired, so I'd say the sellers description was accurate. Obviously someone could have taken it apart and cleaned it thoroughly, but to me that seems like it would be a waste of time for a 22lr rifle.

Check it out..
