Recommendations for .223 Budget Bolt Action Rifle

What does "at least it's not a Savage mean"?

Just another Savage hater. Funny how these guys just keep there mouths shut when comparing targets at the gun range.

It really is. I would have liked a 700 but the QC concerned me.

My ex-army buddy who has a 700 tried my 469.00 Savage(.223) at 300 yards in the wind and was pretty impressed. I used cheap Barska glass but my .223 did not bad.

Unfortunately I could not get it to shoot like he made it, but he also took it off the table and bipod laid on the ground with a rolled up jacket/bag and told me to stop talking.

Hardly scientific but interesting group none the less from a day of casual shooting. My buddy liked the trigger which I set for around 2.5lbs. Unfortunately the heavy steel plate splattered the paper target so all I have is the group on the plate, the holes are loonie sized..

I think what people can't except is these are sub 500.00 rifles that shoot well. It really makes me wonder why people even bother comparing them to rifles costing 2, 3, or 4 times as much, no one is saying they perform as well as the high end rifles.

How many 783s or MVPs are used at those shoots?

I did the Stevens 200 thing in 223 and upgraded parts when I could and now Im pretty happy with it. I also love shooting the lil 223 round.

Exactly what I did also.. Stevens/Savage bolt and action, Timney trigger, Choate tactical Stock and a Stainless heavy barrel. took a long while to find it all from parts on the EE but shoots better than I can. cheap and easy 300 yard pop can hunter.

That TC looks like good value, hope to see one at the range. Anyone can drop 1500.00 and
have a great shooter, I was having fun with a 500.00 rifle.

Just scroll down the post listing a little... I've made a thread last week about the exact same thing... (Sigh)

http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...Need-help-to-choose-a-223-5-56mm-target-rifle!

And finally i decided to try the Ruger American Ranch Rifle in 5.56/.223., just got it yesterday. So far i love the look and the 16" barrel. It will be my 200-300 yards rifle and i paid 590$ for it. (With a free bonus CRKT Ruger knife... And everyone love free knives hahaha). I don't expect doing competition with it so i don't mind if it's shoot 1 1/2" at 300 yard... Im now waiting for the rains to
stop to try this little beast. And did i said it shoot both 5.56mm and .223? Because plinking at 200y with surplus ammo look fun

Modern manufacturing yields surprisingly good rifles at your price point. I'm not going to favour one over another. My son has a 783 in .223 which works better now that it's topped with a Bushnell XLT. Basic scope, basic rifle. Around $650 all in. A buddy at work swears by his Axis. I went for an MVP 24" varmint and topped it with a Nikon Predator. A bit weighty but that's ok for range work or ambushing pests. All in, about a thou for both (before the dollar bombed). Which opens the question, what have you budgeted for glass? Any of these rifles can work but you gotta see

I bought the Remington 700 and added a few things to it. Base price for the rifle was $600.00.

what magazine are you using for that rig?

Me as well, this is where I am going this winter for a stock upgrade.

I wanted the threaded heavier short barrel, and oversized bolt knob.

looks like a SWFA SS classic scope on that rig.

As too your question, I'm running the same as above kinda.

Remington 700 Tactical ACC-SD 16.5" barrel in .223cal with a ACC T51 Blackout muzzle break and Magpul 700 Hunter stock, I ordered a MDT ACIS .223 mag for it which is coming soon.
As for optics I'm trying to track down a Leupold Mark AR 4-12x40AO MOD1 scope.

You can get that rifle for about $700 wit ha Hogue stock

Ruger Predator in 223.
went with the Predator over the Ruger Ranch for the longer barrel.
$499 for the gun then just optics and other cheap toys.

so far i love the gun.
i wanted a cheap 223 for plinking and that is exactly what i got.

my dad made the same but with a weatherby/vanguard and while its better fit and finish he looses the magazine. (which you can add on after market for more money)

Another Question...

Hey guys thanks for all your recommendations!

I currently have the opportunity to snag two good deals on used guns, and was hoping to get your opinions on which would be best or the better deal!
Note that both are in .223

Option A:
Savage Axis II - $460
- 22" Barrel
- Weaver bases and rings
- Tasco 6-24x40mm scope (illuminated)
- 1 magazine
- MINT condition

Option B:
Savage Model 12 FCV - $400
- Fluted heavy barrel (26" I think)
- Bedded action
- Bushnell rings (2 screws missing)
- 1 magazine
- 2200 rounds through it
- Good/great condition (minor scratches)

What do y'all think?

Thanks!
Brad

I'd like to go with the 12

X2 on the 12.

After shooting my Savage Hog Hunter with a free floating medium contour barrel, it makes the pencil thin regular rifles seem just less, even though I know they are not that far apart.

Something about a beefy barrel and metal backup sights makes me think it is better.

If you by chance knocked over a rifle or dropped it say on rocks and the scope was compromised having the option of quick throw scope rings and having irons seems to be the best option, maybe I am old school......

+1 for the savage 12 (heavy barrel is great) Dont worry for scratch, you'll make more over time

An Axis, a Tasco scope and weaver ring... All this stuff is cheap and crappy... Look like someone got a deal from canadian tire!! You don't want this thing! (Jedi trick)
