Picked up a used Savage 111 chambered in .270. Was wondering if there were any recommendations as to were to start for shells. it'll be a dedicated whitetail rifle. I know every gun likes something different but I need to start someplace. Thanks!

Buy three boxes of rounds at CT
Fed Blue box, Win white box, Remington green. Suggest 130gr for WT. One of the three will perform better than the others, but I'll bet all will be within minute of white tail. When you find the best then buy as much as you can afford from the same lot, so that you know you wont run out for a while.

Now if you really want to get the most out of your rifle then look into reloading and that will open up a whole new world of potential for your rifle.
Good luck.

If you just plan to use the rifle for hunting it may be worth it to see if something like Barnes Vortex or Nosler Trophy ammo shoots well in it. If you don't want to spend that much on ammo just go with cheap Federal blue box or something of that like. It will kill WTs.

took me 7 boxes of different ammo to find the one my riffle liked. It ended up being the cheap Federal blue box 130grn

Hey this is good advice. I have a Savage 111 in 270. as a lifetime WT gun, and I'm about 120 rounds into the gun at the range and plinking etc. I'm comfortable and hitting my shots quickly because I practiced with all the different ammo's too see and feel the difference. Now I know the gun, the ammo's, and now when I hunt in season, the gun will see 1-2 or maybe 3 shots a year. I want those shots to be of handloaded quality. As you can see it's not practical to reload for a hunt gun, so I went with Nosler trophy's at 50.00 a box of 20. This ammo is amazingly high quality.

So for my 2.50 a shot, I think it's worth it to have that confident edge of using top quality ammo

ya,ya,ya, the Rem 130gr wallmart ammo is just as good for all practical purposes, deer don't know the difference etc.

I know the difference and it makes me feel just that much sharper.......Who could deny it feels good to use top quality ammo....Right handloaders?

Just looking at those Nosler's , it's looks like something you'd shoot at the Olympics.

I know people in here will FUDD all over me, but common' I'm not setting up a press to load beautiful hunting 270 rounds.

I'm doing right by my grandfather by using the 270. , like he did. The animals haven't changed, just the hype at the gun counters(*koff*Koff *Wholesale Sports*

cheers guys

For factory ammo my model 700 in 270win likes Federal Blue Box 150's, groups right at 1" @ 100yds.

I've read that these are loaded with Speer hot-core bullets (cup and core)....last year which was the first year I hunted with this particular gun and bullet combination I took a black bear, a moose, and a whitetail deer with it....all where clean bang flop kills ....I'm satisfied with the performance of these Federal loads. If you feel you need to shoot a Premium bullets it certainly will not reduce your chances at taking a game animals but you shouldn't believe it is absolutely necessary.

Have fun and enjoy the .270 :)

Expecting to shoot only 1 to 3 rounds per year/season is unrealistic. It is absolutely necessary to get out to the range before the season begins each year to ensure that your POI has not changed. You never know for sure if your rifle is bang on unless you put a few down the spout to verify. JMHO. In order to do that it's going to take more than 1 to 3 shots, plus any added shots at game. Just something to take into consideration.

Use the Winchester supreme Nosler accubond CT stuff for a premium an worked good on bigger deer, but went back to 130gr SuperX got good accuracy an killed some "elk" sized creatures.
Now reloading 130gr Corelokts goin bit slow with good accuracy an seems to be working a treat on fallow deer.

Most important to get some practice and have fun ... dont get too obsessive with accuracy initially ... any .270W load that will keep in 4 rounds inside 4 inches at 100m regularly is plenty good for whitetail in your area. And you rifle will very likely do MUCH better

With my Savage 111 the most accurate is Hornady 140 SST followed by Federal Premium 150. At 100 yardsthe poi between the 2 is about a 2 inch difference so I wouldn't hesitate to switch between either one without resighting.

Remington Core Lokt 130 were the absolute worst and I wouldn't use the gun if that was all that available.

Federal Blue box 130gr or Remington Corelokt's 130gr perform great on whitetail! Ive never found the need to use nosler or barnes out of a 270. This year my buck I cranked (just behind shoulder, maybe a bit farther back then I hoped but still a fatal shot) with my 270 using handloaded 130gr nosler's and he went 150 yards before dying. Any other whitetail ive killed has been with 130gr remington corelokts or the blue box 130gr and all of them either folded or took 1 step and tipped over. Just my opinion and experience.

I shoot 5-7 boxes of shells a year out of my 270. Coyotes, range sessions etc. Why waste money on $45+ ammo for stuff like that? Sure if your going to hunt with it then sight your gun in with it and hunt with it but I wouldnt shoot it year round

Thanks for the great information guys. That's some food for thought I'll ponder. I guess my first coarse of action is to get some good glass on it and then start floating some lead down its throat. I'm guessing the gun will have much more capability then I have skill.
