Hi,

Can anyone recommend from first hand experience a good quality sub $500 1 x red dot for use on a 10" AR for 0 - 400 m CQB type use?

I have a Vortex Strike Fire on my 14.5" AR and I love that red dot, but when I tried it on the 10" AR the balance was all messed up and it felt awkward.

Looking for a light no frills long battery life good quality 3 or 4 MOA 1 x red dot that will co-witness with MBUS.

Any first had recommendations are appreciated.

Dealers welcome.

Marc

I don't have first hand experience, but people seem to really like the holosun red dot sights. They go for under 300 bucks.

I actually wasn't impressed with my Holosun. Features died on me, mounts came loose multiple times. I've still got one, but I have a hard time trusting it.

For sub-500 you can get some gucci brand-name stuff that will last a lifetime

Consider:

Aimpoint Pro or Carbine Optic - these are the same scope with different mounts, sharp dot, massive battery life, etc.

Vortex Sparc ii: Like the strikefire you're familiar with but lighter, tougher, with more mounting options out of the box. Also better turret adjustments IIRC. The new Venom is a neat optic but you'll need a riser for your AR.

Eotech 512: Lots of guys used them for years and love the AA classic optic. If you like the reticle of course. Personally I haven't owned an eotech in ages, but I can understand why guys like them.

Shield CQS - retail's $100 over your limit, but you might find one of these used for less. Think of it as a trijicon RMR with an eotech style reticle that's tougher than all get out. I've got one with just a standard 4MOA dot that I'm quite pleased with, but I also spent some time looking at ones that had spent their life on British army SA80s. Those optics had seen some serious abuse, in some cases with no finish left and serious scar marks, but were still going strong.

You might also look at the lucid HD series. I've never shot one myself, but they seem to have a dedicated following both here and in the USA.

A lot of guys like the TRS-25. I've seen them on shotguns and M14s so I know they can take recoil. Also, since they are closer to $125, if you find it acceptable, you can buy 2 more and still be under budget.

I have a sparc 2. It's clear, light weight and comes with all the hardware to mount 3 or 4 differnt heights. Vortex lifetime warranty as I'm sure you all ready know all for under 300, leaves you 200 for ammo

Only thing I don't like on the TRS-25 was the dot would disappear in the top half of the sight , aside from that it's great for the price .

Could you explain? I haven't heard of this before. I was considering a TRS25 as an alternative to a Holosun, now you got me wondering about this potential issue.

EDIT: Never mind, I found the topic/issue when I googled it.

how much is an xps these days? should be close to 500$

More like $629 plus taxes... Sometimes see them on EE for $500 or so. Certainly a great option though.

Short of that, I've been very happy with a SPARC, and I have no complaints about my Holosun 403c, though it is still fairly new. It's on my Valtro, so it will crap out soon if it's going to!

The problem with the low end Aimpoints like the PRO are that they are not light—I found that they threw the balance of my CTAR off too much. I've found that they work great on a AR with a longer barrel. If it were me I'd spring for a wee bit more cash and get a Micro off the EE. There are some good ones one there now, including at least one with a really nice, lightweight base.

I actually wasn't impressed with my Holosun. Features died on me, mounts came loose multiple times. I've still got one, but I have a hard time trusting it.
That's disappointing to hear--I'd heard good things about the Holosun.

save an extra 50$ and keep an eye out on the EE you should be able to find a H1 in a relatively short time, you'll never look back.
if time is an issue go for a Pro or Carbine Optic like TV suggested.

I own both H1 and T1, cause you know; I absolutely needed NV and deeper submersion capability for my MK18...
