Recommendations for bolt action rifles

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this platform

I'm looking to buy my first bolt action rifle in .308 win either new or used. Any recommendations. Also what's the best place to buy ?.

Cabelas has a Savage pkg deal on this week...

Sale price and $40 off iirc.

Or you might check this one out in the EE https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/2456197-Winchester-M70-308?highlight=m70

Entry level, but no idea what your experience level is or desires are ..aside from a 1st 308 bolt action.

Might I suggest a Sauer 100 in 308 or 30 06, you can sometime find these for around $800 on sale, slick bolts and crazy accurate even with off the shelf cheap ammo. I have pricier/fancier ones but my default bolt hunter remains a Sauer 101 in 30 06 topped with a swaro z3 optic. I can't over compliment how accurate, light yet low felt recoil and overall nice handling the gun is.

I'd stick with the various Euro brands if buying new (Tikka, Sako, CZ, Blaser, etc,). If buying used, find a nice older M98/K98 based rifle--plenty of quality, reliable rifles on EE.

$1,500 budget rifle only, 400yard bear rifle? I’d assume western hunter? Hiking more than sitting? Used kimber, new howa superlite, tikka t3 lite.

Agree completely , I’ve got a 6.5x55 sporter 8x57 1640 and a 9.3x57 146 all fanstastic rifles. Agree about the weight, I think I’m gonna get a stainless Tupperware tikka in 7remmag for all weather and hunts.
I also have a couple old Huskies (1900's),and I love them. A bit on the heavy side if you walk a lot, but I mainly sit in a blind so it isn't a huge deal. I have a 6.5x55 and a 9.3x62, and the 9.3 has a German Claw mount that allows for a quick removal of the scope (without losing the zero). Neat feature, and not a cheap one to get done!

To the original question, it is hard to go wrong with a Tikka, as many have pointed out already. I have one in the 204, my dad has a 270, both are tack drivers. I have a buddy who swears by Weatherby and Savage, but with your budget I'd get something nicer looking than Savage. I'm kinda surprised no one has mentioned CZ yet. I've had a few of them in the past (still have two 22's) and they are well built, nice to look at, and shoot great. I don't know tons about the new 600 series, but I'm sure there are nice used models that you could snag.

Also, if you are buying new, Canada Day is coming up, and many shops will run a sale of some sort. I'm sure there are discounts to be had!,

I would not suggest any of the cz platforms after 550. I just sold a 557 and it took me like a year to move it. HEAVY , not a lot of variations, little to no aftermarket parts that don’t requiring smithing.. this was my experience anyways. Went from a 557 .308 to a parkerhale safari 3006. No regreta

I just got my first of many Fine Bergara B14 Hunter Match Rifles and I must say I'm in shock at the absolute quality and attention to detail. I can't work the bolt with my pinky finger and it's so smooth I can rest a coin in the rail and it won't move while loading.

I sold a few other high end rigs and will be grabbing another B14 Hunter Match in 300wm to go with my tack driving 6.5cr version

Definitely top of the line quality that makes my $2700 Ruger PRS look like a Norinco lol

Huh? All I hunt with is 180gr .308...FROM A EUROPEAN FACTORY
Really? Well you're entitled to you opinion.

The main reason I would choose a 30-06 from any maker, is because I can do more with it, when it comes to heavy bullets, even factory 180s are close to 200fps faster.

Yes, you can load the 308 faster than most factory fodder, but you can do the same with the 30-06 and still beat it velocity wise by 200fps.

All you said was 308 is not available in 180gr as factory loaded. Opinions have nothing to do with this....

"I prefer the 30-06 over the 308Win, for lots of good reasons, most because you can shoot bullets heavier than 165 grains FASTER and they are available as factory-loaded ammo."

That's the direct quote of what I said

Not even a hint that 180gr factory loads weren't available for the 308Win.

Factory loaded 30-06, 180 grain bullets are faster than factory 308 as well as most 165 gr factory 308

There was a time when you could buy factory loaded 200 grain loads, but they weren't common and weren't available for long.

I have to agree, also surprised no one mentioned CZ yet. I will also throw my hat in for the CZ. Definitely in the category of the other well made European manufacturers. If your looking for a hunting rifle they are amazing. 600 series is great. 5 round mag (.30-06)) threaded muzzle, you can lock the magazine and top load rounds, trigger is crisp and couldn’t be easier to adjust.

Tikka and Sauer also great. Lots of great options for your budget. Just read you wanted a Begara, also great guns!

Always fun shopping for a new “toy”
