I haven't dredged through this thread, so I don't know if its been suggested, but 6.5x57 (and 6.5x57R) is a apparently a real dandy, and quite loved in Europe.
Why this over a 308?I went the other way... with a No.1-RSI in 7.62X57.
One of my favourites. 200s for deer, 250s for larger and waaaaay cooler than a 308.358 Winchester fits the bill perfectly. No question, the hands down winner.
