Red Dot on a Lever Rifle

Does anyone know if there is a Rossi R92 pic rail available in Canada?

NOE bullet molds in the USA has a rail that is designed for the 92. As you likely know, under the rear sight they are drilled and tapped. I have rail on my 45 colt and run a 2x pistol scope which works great!

One of my favourite hunting rifles is a JM-marked Marlin 1895 SBL; I have a few optics for it in QD rings so I can switch back and forth between them. One of those sighting systems was a Trijicon amber dot, mounted at the far front end of the scout rail, as far as possible from the eye. I say "was" because I haven't actually used that sight on that rifle since initially setting it up; I much prefer the scout scopes, a fixed Burris and a variable Leupold, that are set up in other QD rings and let me use the gun out to 200 yards easily.

I am thinking of setting up a Henry .44mag Big Boy Mare's Leg, wearing a full-length buttstock, with a micro red dot as its primary sight. Looking for a way to mount the sight out on the barrel, as low as possible. These dots are best used with both eyes open, and for that type of utility I want the sight way out front, away from my eye. Field of view of the sight is immaterial; the field of view to the non-shooting eye is unlimited, so the forward-mounted sight is no handicap and does not limit visibility at all.

The Ranger Point Precision top rail for Henrys is pretty low.

Thanks, yes, I've seen that one already and it is nice and low, but it mounts the dot to the receiver. I would ideally like the dot no further rearward than the position of the factory rear sight. The fact that Marlin/Henry levers have that nice flat drilled/tapped receiver top makes it so easy for manufacturers to create mounting bases, no fancy contouring required on the bottom surface, that finding alternative mounts isn't working out too well for me.

The Henry is such a funky little gun...brass, octagon barrel, certainly not lightweight, more accurate with almost any load than the Rossi Ranch Hand I previously owned...that I have become quite attached to it. It's wearing one of those Marbles "ring within a ring" type sights in place of its original rear sight and is pretty nice to use like this already, so I can afford to be a bit picky about how/if I add a red dot.

Henry H001 with Henry dovetail to pic rail adapter, topped with a Bushnell RXS-100 red dot. So much fun.

Only thing I will say is I am getting a chin hold, much prefer a cheek hold.

Ranger Point Precision has a tactical stock in the works for Henry rimfire levers.

I’ve been trying to get on of Henry’s delta point mounts us here
That would lower things a fair bit.

Actually, I just ordered that exact same base from Skinner a couple days ago. I like the fact that it has a central set screw to tighten into the dovetail, as well as single screws both front and rear to fine-tune the angle of the sight; I suspect it will be too high for my tastes, but a base like this is very versatile and should be usable on just about any gun with a standard dovetail on the barrel, so I'm sure I will find a home for it.

I know it looks nice and low in the pic, but by the time you mount this on the barrel, and then mount even a low Pic-rail mount on your red dot, you have started to build up a fair bit of height. Worth a try, though.

I think a reflex style red dot would be good.

How was ordering from skinner and getting into Canada. I would like to try one out

Haven't received it yet, just ordered this week; I expect no problems, as I have ordered a couple of other times from Skinner and everything went smoothly, but the last time was pre-Covid, so...we'll see. I don't recall them using ###### the last time I ordered, but now that seems to be how orders are processed. They have an option for paying with a credit card, no ###### involvement, supposedly...but you still get an email from ###### confirming, so I dunno. I don't order much from the states, and always buy a pre-paid gift-card Visa for these occasions.

The more I look at the pics, the more convinced I am that this thing will be too high for my Henry. I was snooping around the EGW site and was flabbbergasted at the number of different mounting plates they produce for mounting assorted red dot brands on assorted handguns, including numerous types of dovetails used by various makers...and yet they don't seem to make a simple mounting plate that fits into a standard 3/8-inch barrel dovetail as used on so many rifles. If they made such an item, I would likely buy a couple even if I didn't own whichever brand of red dot it served, and then buy the optics to match. Screw the naked sight right down onto the thin, flat mounting plate and you would have low-profile perfection.

Edited to add: I see that the service that handles Skinner's system for credit card payment has its name blocked out on CGN...for good reason, IMHO. So for those who haven't guessed what it is...let's rename it "Remittance Buddy". :)

i was checking out skinner’s website. It looks like that make that mounting plate for my reflex sight. I’ll probably order that instead of the dove tail mount.
I really liked it on my gun. But the EWG rail was too tall with the pic mount on the sight.
The pic mount removed and the rail gone. Should drop the sight 3/4” to 1”.

Absolutely. They mount low, don’t block the hammer, mate well with woods hunting in less light, and don’t mess with the one hand carry. An Aimpoint H2 on a lever is chocolate and peanut butter.

You can put a Williams FP at the rear, mount a front weaver base and put an Aimpoint on it, and upgrade the front sight if you want an optic with backup irons.

Leupold FX-2 2.5x20mm on weaver low top mount rings is also a great match.

!!!!

Could you narrow down where on their website you found that? Lots of neat stuff on there and I thought I had perused it all, but I don't recall seeing those. I want! :)

I have red doted every lever rifle I have, havent counted lately but upwards of 10 or a dozen from circa. 1889 and up to modern Marlin Cowboys. Very early discovered the same as rmsg, that I needed to raise my cheek rests up considerably to come close to using a red dot proficiently because of the "parallax" that is easily seen in any red dot that I've used. You need a solid, instantly repeatable cheek weld to have any success with a red dot and I could never get that with a chin perch.

I use red dot's on my lever guns because they are a snap to mount on the collectable rifles without drill or taping anywhere that isnt ordinarily drilled...almost every one of them is tang drill from the factory to accept Marbles or Vernier style sights and this is where I mount my red dots...mounting a red dot requires about 6 inches of alum angle (1 1/4" ) and a few screws, a 2 " piece of pikatinni and a hacksaw , hand drill (band saw & drill press is better but not essential) and a couple free hours.

I do have a bandsaw and belt sander and build my stock risers from common pine 2x6. The mount is flat alum 1/8 thick x1' wide (bends easily but strong enough for intended usage). The risers are mounted on existing points already factory drilled so , again, no marring a collectible rifle.

They aint fancy but completely usable for a dude who's eyes accommodate irons very poorly.

Do you have any pics?

94 30-30. with cheap red dot. Sold that rifle in the meantime.

I have a Marlin 336 30-30 pistol grip in the meantime, anyone know where to get a plastic stock for these?

20150823_175751.jpgIt works really well for me as I cannot use iron sights anymore.
