Has anyone tried a trail boss load or any other reduced load in their T97? If you set the gas to 2 I wonder if it would cycle? It would be nice for the indoor range during the winter.

Yeah maybe not. From what I understand there are three gas settings. 1,2,and off. 1 for normal operation and 2 for adverse conditions. Dirty gun full of sand etc. I was thinking maybe this setting could possibly work for the reduced loads. If not you could just turn it off and single shot it.

Well finally bought a t97. Loaded up some 55gr sp over 4gr of trail boss. I will take it to the range Tuesday and see if it will load on its own on setting two.

Do you put in any filler with those or does it not matter that you are using such a small % of the cartridge capacity when using a pistol powder?
I was thinking of making some subsonic loads but there isn't a lot of data for them

start with 15.6 grains of H4895 and a 55 grain bullet of your choice, then work up a half a gain at a time and see if you can get it to cycle.

You can reduce load any cartridge you can find H4895 loading data for by starting at 60% of the maximum load for a given bullet weight. Trail boss is not a pistol powder, it is designed for lead bullets in straight wall cases, however I have yet to get complete powder burn in anything and it is a fair bit dirty, switching to H4895 has been more then delightful, with both recoil and velocity. We have loaded for a 300 WSM from as low as 2550 fps up to 3300 fps depending on bullet weight using H4895. Shooting the WSM with the velocity and recoil of a 6.8 spc makes a guy giggle

Shooting a 208gr pill from my 300BLK rifles at 1000fps makes me giggle :) I added a Remington 700 AAC-SD in 300BLK to the collection, loads are going to get very interesting now that there is no action to cycle.
So something like a 75gr pill from the 223 at a seriously reduced load could be interesting if H4895 can work with it and provide enough gas to cycle the AR.
I think I have some H4895 in the drawer. I'll have a look and see what I can come up with.

same idea as the BLK, go with the heaviest bullet you can stabilize and run H4895 with, the adjustable gas port is a bonus, but be diligent, if you don't see a bullet hit down range be sure to check your bore............

LOL, I stuck a 147gr in my 9mm AR a few weeks ago while developing a subsonic load seeing how low I could go then instead of looking when it sounded different I piled 2 more in behind it. Took a while to get them out but no damage done and it still shoots great. I will be using the chrony next time and making sure there is a new hole in the target each shot. I was just single feeding them waiting for it to quit cycling or quit locking back on empty but it kept spitting out empties so I didn't think twice. Lesson learned LOL, silly blowback rifles never quit ;)

your a lucky guy...............

when reducing loads I typically shoot at a target 10 feet away, takes the guesswork out of the big question to where the bullet is............

I don't put any filler. 4gr of trail boss is pretty bulky. Hodgdons says a little over 1000fps. Probably be lower with 18.5" barrel and trying to cycle the action. So that would be subsonic.

H4895 sounds like exactly what I want. I don't really care about subsonic right now, I just want to be able to bring it to the outdoor range. Can't remember the max velocity allowed. Maybe 1300fps? If the trail boss doesn't cycle it i might try the h4895.

What kind of retarded range only let's you shoot 1300fps?
Even our indoor range here will let me shoot my 338 Lapua.
Sounds like your range is run by anti gun liberal fools.
I would never spend a dime at a place like that.

he meant indoor range, likely rated for pistols only, so if he can drop the velocity he should be good to go..........same rules as a range I used to belong to, backstop on the indoor range wouldn't handle low end 454 casull

Hmmmm....
Why build a range that cant handle anything more than a 40S&W? Just sounds stupid to me. The range I went to in Calgary would let us shoot anything and all they had was shredded tires for backstop. It doesn't need to be expensive to build a backstop that can safely handle whatever you want to shoot at it.

It is an indoor range my bad. Very old I would think. Building was a training centre for WW2. Still better than no range at all.

Tried out the loads at the range. Apparently because its a "rifle" calibre they can't allow it. Anyways, action didn't cycle at all on setting 2. Just turned it off and cycled every shot by hand. Was quiet enough you wouldn't need earplugs outside but inside it was too loud. Since the point was to be able to shoot it at the indoor range this is as far as I will go with this. Just going to load up some hot coyote loads now.
