Reload with retention?

Both are interchageable. While not an absolute HQ urges course designors to draft scenario courses that do not require tac-loads or reloads with retention to be performed "On the clock".

Neither is better, the shooter simply has the option to choose. Slide lock re-loads are the fastest and I try to avoid doing either of the former if I can shoot to slide lock shooting a course of fire. The advantage of a tac load has already been covered. If you can do it, without looking like an uncordinated drunk, quickly, I think it is faster than the reload with retention. If you can't, then a reload with retention is easier to learn.

See picture provided by my friend Troy for the perils of of fumbling the tac load. :D

Uh oh, as it turns out, thats how I look doing most things :p Ah well, lots of time to learn

It is just a game and you better have fun playing or do something else that you will enjoy. Life is to short to be getting all up tight when you are entertaining yourself.

The only difference in the two reloads is simply when you draw the mag from your mag holder.

The tac load requires slightly more muscle coordination since you are going to have two mags in your hand at once while you complete the insertion of the mag in the gun. Because the mag can be stored on the move in IDPA you gain a little time by storing the mag on the move over the reload with retention. The latter calls for it to be stored before you draw your fresh mag.
