I'll be building a 300BLK upper for a MS, it will become my deer gun.

With the cost and scarcity of these rounds, I figured I'd turn to the experts about reloading with .223 brass and loads for 300blk in general.

Finding this info on the net seems to be quite a rabbit hole, especially for those of us with very limited reloading experience.

I'll be going to my local reloading supplier tomorrow to purchase all the necessary components needed, along with some reloading tools I don't already have.

Has anyone had trouble finding resizing dies? Any powder and bullet recommendation? I plan on using supersonic loads. Once I load some I'll share what the results are.

If you are reforming .223 brass, be careful to measure the thickness of the brass. Some Remington and Federal brass is too thick to chamber fully. Most Winchester brass is ok, but you still need to measure it. For deer, I would go at least with a 150 gr. bullet, and I found I got best velocity with AA 1680 powder.

I run a 168 grain load on bulk Remington range brass I cut, formed etc.... 1/2 inch at 50 and 1.5 inch at 100 yards... fairly hot load, supersonic of course. Actually impressed me on steel, hits really hard! Made my own length trimmer from lee 22-250 trim kit just shortened the center dowel that took care of the rough edge when cutting brass off. Any questions message me.

To add to that I have and do enjoy the heavy subsonic loads and that's what started me into the caliber... 208 sub sonic loads are extremely entertaining and fairly accurate, love the caliber!!

I bought 250 virgin Federal cases, not sure I'll wear them out any time soon as I'm shooting them out of an AAC Handi-Rifle. I've been really impressed with Nosler's 125 gr Ballistic Tip over 18.5 gr of H110 - a bit over book but shoots in to 1.25" at 100m after some extensive messing around. As well, the Barnes 110 gr TSX on a max charge of either H110 or L'il Gun has given me spectacular results...

This is really good info. I'm going to find the dies I need tomorrow and start loading some rounds. I'm sure I'll have more specific questions soon enough.

I'll pick up some of that AA 1680 powder as well. I have some H110 already.

Thanks gentlemen.

I used to make brass out of 223, no problems, but 300 b.o. brass is cheap and easy to get now. Mostly I shoot 147 gr. Campro Fmj with 14.5 gr. N110 gr. Just for fun out of my 700

I don't have a good way to cut down my 223 brass for 300, I bought a micro chop saw from amazon today, should get it in a couple weeks.

I bought some Nosler 110gr varmageddon, that I'll use N110 with.

Going to search the EE for other bullets, also need a tumbler to clean my fired brass, it's been sitting in a box for a couple years.

Anybody have personal experience with a 300BO on deer? I have a bolt gun I plan on working up a load for this winter and would like to load up a deer load for about 100 or less yard shooting...walking bush rifle.

No actual data, on a deer ...but

with the lower velocity/ small case of the 300bo ...I would use a bullet that works in the 30-30 .... 170g round nose would give you more frontal area ..jacket is thinner ... or

a lead cast bullet 200g plus / gas check .... they are even now powder coating them

Have dropped two under 100yds using 125gr SST’s over 18gr H110.
Through the boiler and removed upper half of skull on another.

Left a 1.25” exit, took out some ribs and either DRT or within 40yd sprint.

I made a few hundred cases from 223 with a drill and a pipe cutter. It worked very well, theres a couple of videos on it on YT.

When you size your brass, run them up into the die 3 times, that'll account for any spring back in the brass. Out of the 300 pieces that I made from range brass, only 1 didn't pass the headspace gauge.

With the price of 300 BLK from Black Sheep, why bother with all that work of forming your brass (and associated headaches)? I would just buy the 300 brass and start reloading/shooting. AA 1680 is a good choice to start with as is WW 296. You'll be happy with the results and shooting a lot sooner.

Looks feasible. I bought my brass from Henry, and I'm usually at the 110gr subsonic end, so my brass will last a while. $90 per 500 from black sheep brass would last me a long time.
