For you guys that reload what bullets have you had the best luck with. I've shot 150 grain Speer SPs (.311") with decent results. I'm wondering if the Hornady 174 grain bullets would be more accurate. Anyone have any luck with them?

I have found ALL of my Mosins to shoot much closer to the point of aim using 150gr bullets. The standard Soviet round was 148gr, and as such the sights are regulated to this weight.

I've collected about 150 pieces from various sources. I'm currently looking for more. The 150 grain Speers were almost exact for the POA. Accuracy was not all the great though, and the bore on this MN is pretty good so I'm sure it could do better.

Did you find the Speers 150gr sp a little too short? The bottom one is surplus. The top one is a Speers Hot Core 150 gr sp .311

mine like sierra pro hunters in 180 gr over 37 gr of imr4895. I got a load using 123gr hornady sks bullets over 50 gr of imr 4895 from another shooter. he says it puts rounds inside a dime at 100 yds and is his most accurate load in all of his mosins. I have been too lazy to try any yet

It is quite short and I'm wondering if the distance the bullet is from the lands could be a cause of it's so so accuracy.

Here is a picture of my loads:

I'm new to reloading, but everything I've read suggests minimizing the distance between the bullet and the rifling for the best results.
As far as brass goes, I bought 300 Lapua cases from Mystic Precision and 500 PRVI rounds from SFRC. The PRVI is brass and boxer primed.
I'd love to see a pic of your brass after being fired through the SVT. Does the fluted chamber mess up the cases?

I don't have a picture, but those cases I've probably already put through my SVT. The fluting has no effect on the reloadability of the cartridge (in the case of my SVT) at the flutes are so shallow they come out when run through a sizing die.

Not had a chance to reload one yet, any tips on where to find brass in Canada though?

Hirschprecision carries Lapua, dont let the sticker shock you too much, you will get the longest life out of thier brass. You can still find some Norma and Sako kicking around, in loaded form sometimes. If you find a good dealer they can order in brass from those companies.

X2 on the Hornady 123 g 0.310 bullets. My load is with WC735 and it is damn good.

The Lapua stuff can be shorter in the neck (and marked 7.62x53 to prove it). The commonest here are S&B cases and Privi Partizan (better). The 180gn S&B bullet [.311] is my normal one though the 174gn Privi Partizan one is usable.

I went and bought Hornady 174 grain RN (.312") and FMJBT (.3105"). Loading them up as we speak. Range results vs. the 150 grain speer (.311") on Saturday. I'll keep you guys posted.

If these Hornady round nose bullets shoot I know what will be going through the heart of some unfortunate mulie doe this November.

Although now sold, when I did reload for my MN, best luck I had was with 150gr Speer Hot-cors. Tried FMJ 150's 174's and a few others, nothing came close to 150 Hot-cors with IMR 3031.

Friend and myself spent quite a bit of time over a period of about 5 years, wringing these critters out. We found that most MNs will shoot their best with a .312" slug, same as with the .303.

Try the Hornady 150, seated so that the cannelure shows: crowds the leade just a bit, which can be a very good thing.
.

I use Hornady .312 174 gr. HPBT. from Mystic in all of my Enfields and Nagants including the SVT. They shoot excellent in all. I even use the same charge of H.4350 in the .303 and 7.62x54. The SVT. gets a charge of IMR. 4895. I will caution you on trying to seat the bullets long for the SVT due to the possibility of creatinng a slamfire issue.

I finally found Norma brass at a gun store near Brandon Manitoba, expensive but still reloading it, imr4895 over a 150 hornady sp.

Was able to find some factory S&B, shot it and started reloading it now.

Good luck to ya, just gotta phone around and see who has it.

I found it harder to find than dies for my 8mm mauser.
