Reloading for a Garand

Some people feel you should use milspec/surplus brass. I have had great luck with Winchester and Remington.
 
Pretty much everything has been covered, in terms of general information.


I like:

IMR 4895
Winchester brass
CCI#200 primers
165gr Hornady SST

Good for everything from water balloons to moose.

Generally lots...

But I have acually seen (my gunsmith showed it to me) a reciever cracked wide open from the bolt slamming incredibly hard into the rear when somebody fired a "light-magnum" type handload through their garand. The op-rod was literally snapped in half, too.

Made me pretty sad, actually...

I have been using Winchester with decent results and have found Federal to be fairly soft. Lately I have been using PRVI brass for a number of calibers and been very pleased with it, but have not tried it in 30-06 for the Garand yet. When I need to buy 30-06 again I will be looking for PRVI.

Keep in mind that brass life is very short with the Garand, so you won't be getting 10 reloads out of it no matter what brand you use.

Thanks folks.

Mark do you have a source for PRVI brass? I've heard good things about the brass and have some to reload for my .303's, but their rounds are hot and I wouldn't even go near a Garand with them and I don't feel like pulling them.

I have bought PRVI 22-250 brass from Mystic Precision and 7.5x55 PRVI from Tradex. I would try Mystic first for 30-06 and maybe Budget Shooter Supply if Jerry can't find some for you.

The orig powder for Garands was 4895, FYI this was the powder that Hodgdon used to start his business, powder prices have sure gone up since then....

All his life Bruce Hodgdon was interested in shooting, hunting, and reloading. He custom-loaded ammunition for friends during World War II while he was in the Navy and after, while working full time as a salesman for the Gas Service Company. Somewhere Bruce had heard that the government burned huge stocks of surplus powder after WWI because of the lack of market for them, and he figured that the same would be true after hostilities ended in 1945.

Even though he had no place to store gunpowder, and did not know if enough shooters would gamble to purchase unknown types of propellant, Bruce cut government red tape and soon owned 50,000 pounds of government surplus 4895. An old boxcar moved to a rented farm pasture served as the first magazine, the first one-inch ad placed in the American Rifleman, and Bruce was in business.
