Tried 10 test loads today with the base to shoulder set at 1.455”. All went bang

Good that its working for you. My conclusion is that either your die is incorrectly sized, or your chamber is cut with excessive headspace. It shouldn't fail with a cartridge reloaded and sized to the minimum length the die will produce.
