I know... giant black hole for powder. I’m stocked but just bought a new caliber and I’m looking for the magic dust for it. Has anybody seen RL22 available out there in the wild?

I would try Canada ammo d4350sc
Last summers batch was slow, like RL 19, and works very well in belted magnums, 270’s etc.
A five pound jug is great value. Likely half the cost of the Alliant powder that you can’t find.

I’ve got a pound of last year’s D4350. I expect it will work OK, as will H4831. But RL22 is supposed to be the magic pixie dust for 6.5x55 in a precision load.

The magic part of RL22 will be finding it. I’ll keep an eye out for you.

Call hummason manufacturing. They carry Alliant powder.

That's why you buy lots before a shortage. RE#22 is a great powder in the 6.5x55 with 129-140gr bullets. IMR 4350 or N204[AKA RE#19] for the 156-160gr moose drills.

imr7828ssc is the same burn rate and produces excellent velocities/accuracy

These two powders really bring out the potential of a 6.5x55, in a MODERN BOLT RIFLE, such as a Tikka T3.

If you're shooting a milsurp M96 based type, there are other powders more suitable for your rifles needs.

Yes, modern bolt, bench rest, competition. IMR7828ssc might be unusual enough to still be in the case at CanTire. I’ll check tomorrow.

Had I known I would be buying this caliber I would have stocked up six months ago when I was stocking the pantry. Yup, everybody says Re22 which is why I find myself looking now. I may end up just parking the gun this season and keep shooting the .308.

I used to use RL22 in my 280AI. I worked up a load in the early spring and all was swell. Went shooting on a scorching hot summer day and I had heavy bolt lift/ejector slot marks. I changed to 7828 and it works well. I have 8 lbs of 7977 as well I’m hoping to tap into soon, that might be a good option for the Swede as well.

I've shot a lot of Swede caliber guns over the years, both new (Tikka, Ruger) and old (Mausers). I can clearly state that H4350 trumped RE19, RE22, and H4831 in the 129 to 140 bullet weights. Cant comment on other weights as I generally dont shoot them.
It seems there is a lot of dogma floating around in the world of powders...

I did find two pounds of 7828ssc at Canadian Tire right here in town. The guy was kind enough to check in the back and came out rather surprised that he found something someone asked for. They are almost out of powders too.

The gun is a Stevens action with what I believe is a Shilen 26” barrel and Boyd’s stock. I’ll know what I actually bought when it gets here.

RL22 is a great choice for the 6.5x55, but there's others that will yield good results too. These days, supply is a big issue so get what you can get. The IMR Enduron powders are often overlooked, and found in stock when others are sold out. IMR 4955 would be most similar to RL22. Canada Ammo's D4350sc is going to work well in the Swede too, since it's in the RL19/H4831 burn rate

I stopped loading RL 22 in my 280AI as well. Great accuracy but not temperature stable. Just loaded up a few with RL 23 to try out.
