REM 223 deer hunting

Well let's say there is a massive canadian big bodied 170 class buck quartering towards you at 375 yards. Hes giving you the look. You have 20 seconds to make the shot. Hes 10 yards from a 100 foot ravine. 22 cals kinda not ideal there.
Inches of antler shouldn’t be the deciding factor on whether you take a shot or not… Can you make the shot? Are you using a bullet that will upset at the impact velocity and create enough damage to disrupt vital
organs? Enough velocity retention and adequate bullet construction to penetrate to vitals?

THAT should be the deciding factor on taking a shot or not.

Easy, neck shot and drop him right there. If the ravine is really a factor it doesn't matter what you hit them with, I have shot deer with 338wm and 300 wsm, both easily made it more than 10 yards.

OP, I use 223 for deer. Shot 2 does last year with the TTSX. One went 30 yards and the other went 100, both heart shots. Massive damage and huge blood trails for both deer.

Only pussies use a .223... .22 Short is all you need.

I know you were probably joking, but my father in the early 60’s used a .22 long in a pistol to shoot a black bear which dropped on the spot when hit between the eyes. I could be off a bit on the exact spot, I was still less than ten years old. This was in the early sixties, I was a youngster and the bear wasn’t that big. Although with proper placement it would work, I’m not advocating it though.

What if, what if, what if.... We just stick to what experiences we have actually had, rather than worrying about fantasy problems.

But no one has a gun to your head forcing you to take the shot, 223 or 7RM. 95% of hunters have no business taking a 375 yard shot from a benchrest on a paper target, let along taking that shot in the field.

It's entirely possible that it will go 10 yards and into that ravine even if you shot it with a 300win mag... Some calibers might make it less likely than others, but nothing is going to guarantee it doesn't end up in the ravine especially when you factor in the 375yds of bullet travel during which the deer can move and turn a perfect shot into something less ideal.

Define better for deer? I know the 22-250 puts deer on the ground like they were hit by lightning.

I'm not saying I need a magnum or anything, but in the hypothetical 375 yard Buck scenario, given the choice I would grab my 6.5 creedmoor or 308 over my 223.

/\ This exactly. I could not agree more. I may even lump myself into that group as well at times.

my point is certain rounds penetrate further and do more damage on funny angles. Dont push the range too much. I have friends who pushed the range and had less than stellar results. shot placement was good.

My father shot the last deer that I seen shot with .223. The 200 lb. 6 point buck seen him at the same time my dad saw the deer and tried a 180 degree spin to run the way it came. My dad fired two quick shots from a mini 14 and both tucked in from a quartering rear shot in to the back ribs. Both slugs were recovered in the chest after travelling the full length of the chest cavity. My family enjoys deer liver and heart, but, the whole chest cavity was just bloody stew. Most of his deer have been shot with 30-30 or 12 gauge buck, but, the 223 made more of a mess. The deer was shot at a close range of about 25 yards. Anyone who says a .223, placed well at closer ranges is not an effective deer round has not seen it done.

Nor is the shot

The older Hornady 55gr SP with cannelur or the 55gr Win 55gr SP kills deer dead.I used to load these in a triple deuce for my Dad as he was recoil sensitive to hunt deer in Ontario. He also terminated 3 problem black bears one rd per customer. Load was 24gr of Win 748 /Win brass/CCI small rifle mag primer.

I have always thought the 222 would be top shelf for bear defense.
