Hey guys, I just ordered a new Rem 700 5R mil-spec model. I was wondering if any of you have tried one out yet? They seem to be a bit of a rarity up here.
:50cal:

Ok rifle Picky as hell on load development!
Would shoot most ammo 1 to 1.5 moa tried varget,4064,RL-15,Imr 4895, and BL-C2 as well as benchmark! Is built for 175 grain bullets but go figure mine likes 168s better.
Hated the trigger, i replaced it and i had done a bit of work to it.

My Bolt was grinding on the back for the first fer outings, I polished it up its fine now.

Not sure about the palm swell!

Would I LOOK at alternative rifles over the milspec! Tikka, sako, Yes if given the oppertunity again would i buy one mYBE YES, it has some good things!

My loads are still not 100% developed but it looks like 44.5 gr of varget or 42.5 grains of Imr 4895 with a 168 gr SMK! 20 th off the lands works

What sucks is it does have a short mag 2.855 is the max OAL you can chamber thats way far from th elands in mine, my lands sits at 2.965 and is not as accurate sat to that depth..

Not 100% impressed with it yet.

Time will tell

JY, did you try bumping the bullets back to 2.8 BTW? 2.8, 175 SMK, and lots of Varget work well in the ones I have seen.

There is no question that this gun will shoot, it just took a lot screwing around with the loads and its still not 100% developed.

I am hoping by round count 300-350 I will have founf the sweet load for it..

I guess it was not like my Tikka Tactical where that gun shot bad ammo under an inch and shot good ammo into the same hole!

The mil-spec spits out bad ammo 2-3 inches shoots factory quality ammo into 1-1.5 moa and custom ammo under an inch.

I have got it to .5 now consistantly but it took some work which i enjoyed.

Now all i have to do is play with 2 powders and the seating depth, also still have not 100% confirmed the 175 vs 168 smk!! This weekend I hope!

Hi

I rebarreled my 700P with a Rock Creek 5R 1/11.25 twist.

The winning load for me is 175 SMK with 44grns of RL15. 2.830" AOL, Lapua brass. Average speed 2700FPS. Federal factory gold medal 175 does the same thing. (so much for 2600fps in the catalog:rolleyes:)

I have put 5 shots into one ragged bullet hole at 100y.

Varget like to be loaded HOT,IMHO

REF
Sticker that speed sounds about right with a barrel like that over a Factory tube

Waiting for mount/rings/optics for mine... On a side note, when I first took it out of the box I thought the stock was a lot greener than I remember in the pictures... But its really growing on me.

Mil Spec !!

Mine should arrive tomorrow :) I ordered a Falcon Menace Scope for it but that won't be ready until Mid Feburary ,In the mean time I can at least get some hand load's ready .
** I am really looking forward to getting out on the Range ** :sniper:

Rem 700 milspec - first impressions

Mine arrived Friday ( after I'd just come back from trying out the new Norinco M14s at the range !!) so I was pretty excited with two new ( but totally different ) toys having arrived and still a whole weekend left to play with them.

First impressions of the Mil-spec: "wow - this is one cool piece of kit" The stock actually looked nicer than I was expecting and wasn't as green as I feared it might be and was beautifully fit to the rifle. The new X-pro trigger was a delight and broke clean and crisp. I mounted a Bushnell Elite 4200 6x24 using leupold rings and a leupold long range one piece base and I put on a Harris bipod and a Blackhawk Industries cheekpiece. Taking it to the range on Saturday I was printing just a hair outside 1 moa with cheap Federal 150 grain hunting ammo. I have now picked up some premium Federal Match 175 grain and will give the gun a good test next weekend. In summation - this is a superbly well put together firearm that is undoubtedly capable of significantly better accuracy than I can deliver and I am really happy to have picked it up.

I found the same thing. My load for my .308 bolt rifle:

46 grains varget
155 smk
.5 MOA

That's the same amount of Varget I am using behind 154gr. Lapua Scenars with Lapua cases and WLR primers. Cartridge OAL 2.84". This isn't exactly a hot load but is approaching maximum.

Some guys are reportedly using over the recommended maximum of 47 gr. *wow!*. You'd be picking pieces of me off the ground if I used much more than 26 gr. as my chamber wasn't cut with a long leade.

My old Browning Safari has a very light 22" barrel. I free-floated it, and it now shoots very well. 5 rounds of Federal 168g GMM into 3/4 MOA at 200 yards, and 3 rounds into 5/8" at 100y with 46g of W748 pushing 168 SMK, at 2600fps. I think those were set to 2.80" OAL too.

Not a target rifle but shoots pretty good, and Win 748 is a decent powder for .308 as well.
