Bringing back an old thread
Well, I finally got a scope on my 5R. I opted for a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x 50mm with the 1000 yard Rapid Z reticle. I used Leupold PRW rings and bases (had it done at a gun store and bore sighted).
Initial impressions: Love the stock, and the look of the 5R. Nicely put together rifle. Stainless, synthetic and beautiful. But.. that only goes so far.
So the wind finally let up after 3 weeks of waiting. I went to the range and sighted the 5R in. I had some Fusion brand 165 grain hunting ammo with me. I figured I'd use the crap ammo to put it on paper. I used a front bag, and a rear bean bag on a bench rest table. Shooting was at 100 yards.
So first shot, it's horizontally dead centre but right at the bottom edge of the paper. I take an educated guess and figure they bore sighted it for the centre crosshair which with this reticle would be at the 500 yard mark. I use the centre crosshair and it's practically dead centre. Some counting to use the #1 bar on the scope and I'm right where I want to be. Happy so far.
Then the real surpise hits. 3 shots and they are overlapping. Considering the wind was starting up again, I couldn't be happier. Unfortunatly I only had a few more rounds left and the wind was picking up again (only 10 of the cheap stuff). So I played hit the 4 bullseys around the centre cross (red cross with 4 round bullseyes at the edges). When I did my part they were right on the bullseyes. I saved the last two for sniping the small gong at the 200 yard mark. No problems making that shot

.This thing is a sniper rifle.
This was the best range experience I've ever had with a stock out of the box rifle.
If I were to ever use this rifle for hunting I would definately use that Fusion 165 grain ammo for this. It was giving me target grade results. Considering my DPMS LR-308 hates this stuff it really surprised me.
My next range trip will be with Federal 168 grain target and 167 grain Lapua target ammo.
I've been doing a lot of reading on this round, and my first reloads will probably be:
2.8 OAL (One of the few rifles that caters to this), IMR 4064, 43 grains, 168 SMK with Win brass.
I'll give the 175 SMK rounds a try later on.
One other note with this rifle. Some of the reviews I've read have stated that 2550-2600 fps seems to be the accuracy sweet spot for these rifles.
I'm very excited about playing around with this rifle. So far it's the best out of the box stock rifle I've ever purchased.
