Rem 700 5R milspec

I know the milspec was cut for 175s but if you cant get her cutting the same hole try 168s with 44-45 gr of varget that made mine from an average moe rifle to a sub moa evertime out.

A quick coat of paint because a bare stainless rifle in the woods is wrong.

I tried a buddie's Rem 5R out and I found looking at the brass after firing it, the chamber was rough as hell. It was a brand new gun but the scuff marks on the new Lapua brass was something I'd never seen before. I told him to take it back to the place he bought it and get it replaced. That's been my only experience with them so far.

Bringing back an old thread :D

Well, I finally got a scope on my 5R. I opted for a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x 50mm with the 1000 yard Rapid Z reticle. I used Leupold PRW rings and bases (had it done at a gun store and bore sighted).

Initial impressions: Love the stock, and the look of the 5R. Nicely put together rifle. Stainless, synthetic and beautiful. But.. that only goes so far.

So the wind finally let up after 3 weeks of waiting. I went to the range and sighted the 5R in. I had some Fusion brand 165 grain hunting ammo with me. I figured I'd use the crap ammo to put it on paper. I used a front bag, and a rear bean bag on a bench rest table. Shooting was at 100 yards.

So first shot, it's horizontally dead centre but right at the bottom edge of the paper. I take an educated guess and figure they bore sighted it for the centre crosshair which with this reticle would be at the 500 yard mark. I use the centre crosshair and it's practically dead centre. Some counting to use the #1 bar on the scope and I'm right where I want to be. Happy so far.

Then the real surpise hits. 3 shots and they are overlapping. Considering the wind was starting up again, I couldn't be happier. Unfortunatly I only had a few more rounds left and the wind was picking up again (only 10 of the cheap stuff). So I played hit the 4 bullseys around the centre cross (red cross with 4 round bullseyes at the edges). When I did my part they were right on the bullseyes. I saved the last two for sniping the small gong at the 200 yard mark. No problems making that shot :D.This thing is a sniper rifle.

This was the best range experience I've ever had with a stock out of the box rifle.

If I were to ever use this rifle for hunting I would definately use that Fusion 165 grain ammo for this. It was giving me target grade results. Considering my DPMS LR-308 hates this stuff it really surprised me.

My next range trip will be with Federal 168 grain target and 167 grain Lapua target ammo.

I've been doing a lot of reading on this round, and my first reloads will probably be:

2.8 OAL (One of the few rifles that caters to this), IMR 4064, 43 grains, 168 SMK with Win brass.

I'll give the 175 SMK rounds a try later on.

One other note with this rifle. Some of the reviews I've read have stated that 2550-2600 fps seems to be the accuracy sweet spot for these rifles.

I'm very excited about playing around with this rifle. So far it's the best out of the box stock rifle I've ever purchased.

I had one but was not overly impressed with it myself for the extra money asking for it.

The barrel has R-5 rifling that does not mean it is a Rock M-24 Cut barrel, it simply means it uses the saame technology.

A sps or a police is just as accurate as teh Milspec from what i have shot.

dumped 200-250 rounds through mine and it shot well under 1 moa for 5 shots and shot good at 200 yards. and it liked Varget with 168s or 4064 set at 2.800 right on.

I myself would say the milspec is overrated compared to the Police model better in some ways and the same in some.

I have a few 308s and I did not need a third that shot the same as the other 2

It just goes to show you, each rifle is different. My 5R rocks. If I could only have one rifle. That would be it.

On the other hand my XR-100 has really disapointed me. I'll have to get it bedded and the trigger done. I was hoping for a laser right out of the box. Others however have had great success with theres. I shot a stock 22-250 version that shot really well. Mine didn't.
Nothing is guaranteed.

Mine shoots quite well also, but not better than my 700p, rather about the same.

Both have since undergone lots of tinkering, the 5r now is bedded in an a1 with a jewell trigger, and the 700p is in the process of becoming a custom, so it's not comparing apples to apples anymore...

Thanks to some great deals from gun nutz members I just bough my 5R and Millet scope and have had mine out twice so far and think it is great and will only get better. My first day was at a 100yrd range and after 10-15 rounds of sighting, cleaning and playing from the bench, i proned out with the bipod and it grouped 3 rounds at .4 with Norma 168 match. Then last monday I went up to one of my favourite shooting spots in the hills and worked on my come ups for 300 yrds. With the same ammo (Norma match) prone bi-pod off some rocky forestry road it grouped 3 rounds at 1.3" at the 300yrd mark. It easily took first shot hits on a small 500ml water bottle and 4" steel target that I set out at 300. I put a Millet tactical 4X16 scope on it with TPS 20moa base and rings. I am now setting up to reload and snagged some 175 smk..can't find Varget anywhere so am debating on what powder to use. wish I could post the pics of the groups but am at work right now so can't...shhhh don't tell anyone I am on the net..
