Rem 700 feeding problem

I had a 700 BDL rebored to 35 Whelen a couple of years ago. I had trouble with the shells feeding through the action. About 1 out of 40 rounds would jump sideways out of the action. This rifle was a DM model. I purchased another stock with a hinged floor plate and had it fitted to the barelled action. I can't even click one cartridge in the magazine. It just pops back out. I really like this rifle and would like it to function properly. Although, it hasn't fed well since day one, I have shot a lot of animals with it and it was a Christmas gift from my wife and it means a lot to me.

Let me know what you recommend.

Thanks,

I believe a DM receiver is not the same as the ones used for A and BDLs. The DM receiver is intended to be used with the detachable magazine, not with an internal magazine.
I think you would be better off to go back to the DM setup. What was the calibre of the magazine you were using.

I would be inclined to try to tweak the '06 magazine to work to your satisfaction. Maybe a silly question, but does Rem. make a DM in .35W?

Remington factory DM actions are factory altered and will not work with the standard ADL or BDL magazines...

If you can't get the factory DM to feed well, it could be converted over using the Kwik-Klip conversion and use a Kwik-Klip single stack magazine. It would look funny in a Remington DM stock though.

Nope, can't use a floorplate with an original DM action, as the feed rails are on the DM, not the action. There is nothing there to hold the shells in your action.

Only remedy is to go back to a DM setup, and try a new mag to see if it feeds better than the original. You have no choice but to have a DM, other than getting a new action....

If you buy a spare Remington DM, it actually says on it, ".25-06, .270, .30-06, .35 whelen."

* Well they may not all say that.

Its kind of an interesting situation you have. I'm actually going the opposite way, from an ADL to a factory remington DM setup. Just have to get the feed rails opened up a bit. Doesnt look too tricky.

The detachable mag for the 700 does not say 35 Whelen on it, it only reads long action. The clips for the 7400 and 7600 say .35 Whelen. When it was a .30-06, it fed fine but for some reason, with the fatter bullet, it is not reliable. The only thing you can count on is the first shot. I might as well have a 7400.

If the shell is popping out the side, I'd say it is a mag issue and a new one may solve that problem. Sometimes just bending the lips a little makes all the difference. I'd try a new clip, and go from there.

How did it feed as a .30-06??

I just put the DM stock back on and tried feeding round nose ammo through it. If I push up on the magazine from the bottom, it seems to feed okay. What if I have my gunsmith inlet the stock where the action sits just a little? This would raise the clip up just a hair to line the bullets up with the chamber just a little bit better.

What do you think?

I'd maybe try taking a bit of material off the bottom of the stock where the bottom metal sits to raise it up a bit. Not sure if you'd have to shorten the action screws or not??

You always have the other stock to work with, it can be fitted with the DM too.
