I was thinking of going this route, either a 16,5 or. 20 HB. Was just wondering if the MDT is anygood. Also if the MDT TAC 21 specs show 11.5 inch Handguards. So I'm guessing you would have 5 inches of barrel out past the Handguards , with the 16.5 and 8.5 with the 20 barrel?

Areyou looking at this combo in replace of the ruger precision rifle? Are you set on a remington 700?
Yes, I got a rem 700, 20 inch HB. I'm going to try a MDT TAC 21 or the Cadex OD Core.I was trying to figure out how much barrel protruded out past the forend. I called 3 different venders yesterday enquiring about the Ruger Precision, and was told by all 3 , that the expected delivery of the RP is 90 days. To long a wait for me.

What are your expectations of the rifle and what are you going to be using it for?

The 700's usually shoot MOA or better right out of the box. Is it going to be a rifle you shoot at the range and short range competitions 100-300 (sniper/countersniper matches)with some "tacti-cool" style it should do it fine.

If you plan on using it for Bench Rest or Precision type matches it might bring some frustration...but you will still have fun with it.

If you are planning on competing in Precision type matches I would put the money toward gunsmithing.

I have several 700's from custom to stock..they are all fun to shoot.

I'm not doing any matches or long range precision. Target shooting mostly. Out to 3 or 4 hundred yards. I hand load , so I'm looking for as much accuracy as possible. I think either system will work for me. I was just wondering the amount of barrel protruding , past the Handguard, for cosmetic reasons only. I would also like to take the rifle on a hunt, bear and moose.i couldn't find any pics or actual info on the amount of barrel protrusion, so I just took a shot and went with the 20. Also the MDP TAC21 shows a length of 11.5 hand guard but I couldn't find the info for the Cadex.. Both those systems state that you can use detachable AICS mags. Is there any modifying that needs to be done? Thanks

I've got nothin but good things to say about the cadex! I was lucky to find a field strike on the EE, as all the od chassis were out of stock (originally wanted light strike but both had 6 week lead time plus shipping). They treat you well, even if you buy used!

I wasn't a fan of the tac 21 I had. Bulky, heavy, and decreased accuracy in my case.
It all depends on what kind of accuracy you're looking for. Repeatable, reliable accuracy is quite another thing from what most post up in cherry picked groups. A factory 700 does not excel in this department. A tikka is better. But you really need to have a quality aftermarket barrel before things get really consistently good with either.

I want repeatable , reliable accuracy. So your saying the 20 inch HB is not capable of this. That is gonna suck. I'm already a bit disappointed then, and I haven't even shot it yet. The reviews looked good though.

With a 20" bbl, you'll have 8 1/4" sticking out past the handguard.
I have a Rem 700 5R in a TAC21 chassis. I like it. Constant sub MOA accuracy for me. It is heavy though, which would suck if you're carrying it around while hunting. The mags are no issue whatsoever, and the new Ruger Gunsight Scout mags are cheap and work perfectly.

I wouldn't get discouraged before you even start. I doubt you are expecting to shoot one hole groups all day every day? That's just not realistic. Develop some loads for it and shoot it. I have a 308 savage fcp-sr that I have shot ragged holes at 100 yards with hand loads. Do I do that everyday without issue? Nope! You reload so you can shoot more with all the money you are saving...haha

MDT for the mags. Use my Tac21 for a hunting rifle. I love it. Accurate as all hell and looks bad azz. The short barrel shouldn't be less accurate, just less speed. Find a load for what it likes and have at it.

I have a tac 21 and another on the way. Mine shoots great! I really like the ergos of the chassis with a PRS buttstock and palm shelf grip. Mine will shoot one hole groups if I do my part. The weight isn't that much of an issue for me, both of mine have mercury recoil reducers in the buttstock.

They both weigh about the same, so it seems either is good to go. Comparing both at $700 the TAC21 seems to be the better deal. As it has a butt stock and 20 moa rail. But I plan on using either my CTR or Rogers super stoc anyway. So I think I'll let overall length decide.

The factory barrel will the limiting factor. If it shoots really well now, it will probably shoot equally well in the chassis. Putting the barrelled action in the MTD isn't going to make it into a tack driver if the potential isn't already there.
I would also suggest that making decisions based on appearances - like how much barrel projects from the handguard - doesn't have much to do with accuracy.
If you are shooting only to 3/400y, you do not need a 20minute rail.
