Rem 700 / MDT TAC21 or Cadex. Any good?

The factory barrel will the limiting factor. If it shoots really well now, it will probably shoot equally well in the chassis. Putting the barrelled action in the MTD isn't going to make it into a tack driver if the potential isn't already there.
I would also suggest that making decisions based on appearances - like how much barrel projects from the handguard - doesn't have much to do with accuracy.
If you are shooting only to 3/400y, you do not need a 20minute rail.
yes I understand that appearance has nothing to do with accuracy . But what I'm using it for , appearance has nothing to do with. It's just my personal preference , kinda like choosing the Color of a vehicle.:) I like pretty things. And I know I don't need the 20 rail, but you never know. My capabilities may change, and for the same amount of money , it's included.

I got this rifle for paper punching and will use it for hunting. I know there's probably better options but this is the one I got and it will or should do those two things. I know I don't need a tac21 or Cadex chassis but I like the look. So I'll get one , if the gun is a shooter. I have 5 diff brands of cartridges and 75 test loads to try tomorrow. That should give me the answer as to how accurate she is . I've had a sub moa 7 mm , so I know what to expect. And if both systems are equally good , especially for what I'm doing , then yes barrel protrusion matters to me.

yep , I guess that's why they're are so many options, colours, etc of the same product.

I don't know mdt's plan behind the tac 21, but cadex was designed for military/le use. Whereas having a black rifle in a desert enviroment would stick out much more than a FDE coloured one. Then the options for the cheaper models are just for the civilian market so they are easier to sell, then the difference between the high end models and low are features that make the weapon system that much more powerful (think nv or thermal scope attachments).

EDIT: measured it up, on my 24" barrelled 5r sticks out 10.75" the end is a C shape tho, so the top and bottom are covered but the sides are not.

So on a 20" barrel 6.75" will be exposed.

Thanks for the measurements, i think I'll go with the Cadex. For my use either would do but the Cadex it is. Again thanks for all the input...

There's guys that shoot F-class very competitively with tube and chassis guns. They aren't just for looks.

The thing is the MDT isn't really a tube gun. It's more of a chassis stock that looks like a tube gun, and that's ok if that's what you want.
The hole for the receiver is so far over size that there is no point in gluing it in like a MAK or Elisio.

The idea of a tube gun is for the hole to be just slightly larger than the receiver so the epoxy layer is thin, thereby limiting compression and transferring the load to the aluminum tube so the action would be effectively more stiff and ridged. (this is particularly needed for the Rem700) This is not the case with the MTD where you just screw the action in, not glue in.

That's not to say that you cannot shoot well with the MTD. The highest 1000 yard F-class score I ever heard of was shot using one, but that shooter would have done the same with just about any decent chassis.

Both my mdt's have the actions glued in. Well one is still being built by Chou bros.

I've owned/own quite a few HB Rem 700's and almost always upgrade the stock unless it is the HS Precision found on the Police Model (not the one on the R5). I've used: AICS 1.5 and 2.0, McMillian HTG and A5, Bell and Carlson A3 and A5 ( B&C are simply awesome value BTW ), Dolphin (and copies), MDT Tac 21 and Cadex and have reviewed most of them either on here or on my website. While there is nothing at all wrong with the MDT, the way it works does position the scope a little high for my taste and if one wishes to access the trigger then there is a disassembly required. Personally, I find the Cadex ( I have the Field OT ) to suit me better than the MDT Tac 21 did but that is, of course, a subjective evaluation.

Did you happen to try an mdt chassis with the cutout forend that allows you to lower your scope?

OK, so how much larger than the action is the hole in the "tube"?
From what I've seen, the hole is much larger than the action - unless something has changed recently it's more like .060-.080 bigger.

Is the hole .010-.020" bigger than the action or more like .060-.080" bigger than the action?
