Rem 770 vs Savage Axis

When I was buying a rifle I asked the gunshop guy about the rem 770... He really didn't have much nice to say about it. I have a Savage M111 and I love it. I think either will probly do you well for varmints.

just bought a savage 200 monday in .223, trigger is horrible adjusted it but its still bad so i ordered a basix trigger today.
should have it by next week.
if you buy thr axis you can expect much of the same i would think.

I haven't shot a 770. It's designed to be cheap, and from the reviews, that's what you get. I didn't think it would be worthwhile trying one. Are the new Marlins not made by Remington now? I recall some complaints about Marlin's recent quality. I even had problems with a recent (2005) Remington 700 and (2007) 11-87. Not impressed with their fit and finish.

I bought an Axis from Wholesale Sports during their boxing 2-week sale. I wasn't expecting much, but the trigger is actually pretty good on mine. Not too much to complain about for a $250 rifle that comes with a mounted Bushnell scope. :)

Anything is better than Rem. 770, with the exception of Mossberg 100 ATR which is worst. Others are right, Marlin XL7/XS7 is the best value for your money.

The complaint is that you have to waste youtime taking off the crappy chinese scope Bushnell put their name on and go to the effort o finstalling and boresighting something better.... this goes for both the 770 and axis packages....

The Axis is marginally better than the 770.... If it was all I could afford I would buy one and hunt with it....

Axis recommendation ditto for me as well. Yeah, I just could not resist boxing day as well. Bought a 22-250 in stainless. For the extra cash you save you can invest in good optics. Changed the scope out and 300m testing with tuned loads shows groups averaging 2", sub MOA with no fancy barrel break in mumbo jumbo. With bulk 45gr win it shot 1 1/4 moa straight out of the box. There are trigger options, but the factory one is very servicable. Also found that this rig is one of the lightest you can get straight out of the box too. Not a bad option for a mountain gun I would say.

However, there are compromises and that comes in a cheezy plastic clip. Be careful to ensure full clik when setting the clip. Only time will tell how this item will hold up, but on the other hand, it will be rather easy to replace if it does fail. Other than that, a great buy you will not regret packing out some critters with.

Load and shoot my friends, load and shoot.

Thats what I figured Axis is the way to go,thanks for all the replies.
Any more good deals on these anywhere.

Not telling you how to spend your money but why not kick in the extra $100 and get either a Savage fxp111 or a Remington 700 sps DM?.....

I think they would make you happier in the long run....

LOL! It's not that bad of a scope. And I did replace it. Took less than 30 minutes to have it all setup again with another scope and boresighted. You can also sell the old scope to recoup some $.

Nail on the head. Spend an extra bit and own a gun you won't want to get rid of in six months

To the op both the 770 and the axis have been designed to meet the needs for the entry level shooter.

The 710/770 have had quite a few functionality issues since first manufactured. Hence the bad Rap

The Axis has been overall better... after a handyman special trigger job, the axis rifles are out shooting some rifles 2 or 3x the price point.
As for the fit and finish or to build on neither are good

If you are looking to buy a gun, sight it in and use it ...The Axis would be a great choice at a great price.

PS I have a 710 in .270 I didn't care for it but my brother inlaw regularily kills coyotes with it and with shoot near MOA out to 200yrds
The 111fpx savage is the rifle I shoot now and love it added the basix trigger MOA ALL DAY EVERY DAY!!!

Have fun Shoping
ps I think WSS had the savage 111fpx for $399.00 last week

OH YEAH pkg guns will not have quality scopes...you will want to up grade!!!
quality glass makes a big difference. as does some kind of adjustable trigger.

The handyman Axis trigger Mod is pretty easy and will save you some $$$$

If you aren't set on a detactable magazine then I would buy a Marlin XL7. They have blind magazines. But the trigger and overall feel of the gun are a lot better than the Axis.

I would definitely choose an axis over a 770 though.

The Stevens 200 is also a great accurate inexpensive rifle to look at if the detachable mag is not a buying feature for you!!!
Personally the reason why I bought the 111 was the detach mag. Ease of load/unload

...

Not really. Marlin was bought by the same company that owns Remington but that doesn't mean Remington is making the Marlin guns.

The new owners did close the old Marlin factory and move production to a new one co-located with Remington and it seems not many Marlin production line employees moved to follow their jobs, so the Marlins are probably made by a lot of new employees who haven't made guns before, or if they have, not Marlins. This seems to have led to a lot of quality defects in Marlin lever-actions models and they actually announced they were suspending production of their lever guns until they got it sorted out. We don't seem to hear the same complaints about the new Marlin XS and XL bolt action rifles and the fellows who have bought those speak very well of them.

In recent years there also seems to have been significant increases in the rate of defects in Remingtons but I can't recall any actual statistics having been reported.
