Rem 783 PRS/Tactical Rifle Build - McGowen Making Prefits Now

Boyds Pro Varmint... putting in another booking with Boyds shortly so if you want something, just pm or email.

I have the CDI Axis DBM here but alot of fitting will be needed. The factory mags work pretty good and will be a drop in fit with the Boyds stock.

Go bug the barrel makers for prefits... let's get this thing rolling.

And Timney is also thinking about making a trigger... go bug them too.

Oh, I was also going to say, the trigger looks a heck of a lot like the one on my Marlin XT22 rifle, which I find to be quite nice. I suspect they have a similar design heritage.

Did you need to inlet the stock at all for it, or is Boyd's already set up for the 783 footprint?

Great write up Jerry. You mentioned something about not liking the PTG DBM. What about it made you choose all the extra work with inletting for the CDI?

If you read my article, you will see it is about access to the latch and mag. With the action set up, having the latch as part of the trigger guard makes for a very long reach to get you fingers around the mag. In other actions, I have had to use 2 hands.... very slow and awkward.

By separating the set up as pictured, it is a simple grab and pull... for me, it is so much easier to do.

The only way to get CDI or anyone else interested in making parts it to let them know about your interest.

To modify the CDI AXIS DBM to work with the 783 would be very simple as you are simply moving a few dimensions around.

For the stock, it is easy once the DBM dimensions are set .... I had to do a bunch of cut here, trim there to figure out where things line up.

The Savage was dismissed years ago when the Rem 700 was the "only" way to go.... then customer bought rifles, chatted up the aftermarket. now the range of parts is pretty much on par with the Rem 700.

So if you think this is a good project, grab a rifle and then bug the makers of stuff that you want more toys.

Hi Jerry,

I saw your project first in Facebook and then here. Funny that I was going through a similar path. I'm no way as involved into this sport as you and wanted to start from somewhere at the cheaper end. Bought the Rem 783 .308 1.5-2 years ago and right after that I started looking to improve it. Here is how it looks like for now:

I put a Falcon Menace 4-14x44 FFP with Blackhawk Black Matte Tactical 30 mm Medium 6 hole Caps (although is says 'Fits up to 40 mm objective lens I didn't have any issues).

Put Boyds Pro Varmint Rem 783 SA directly from Boyds. Rod from Calgary Shooting Centre pillar and glass bedded. Used the Beartooth Comp Raising Kit to adjust the height to align and the bipod from Caldwell, so nothing fancy.

As you have mentioned I didn't find the bolt comfortable enough so bought the bolt lift from Corlane Sporting Goods by Kinetic Research Group.

After a bit of Dremel work I could fit it to the bolt. So far it's holding pretty good.

My only problem is with the magazine; it's so hard to get it out so I keep it in and feed manually as I'm still training myself to catch up with the accuracy level of the rifle (not quite there yet).

That is a great looking rifle. I do have not any issues with my mags coming out.

Likely the latch is hanging up on something or the action bolts are squishing things the wrong way.

you will just need to see where it is tight and relieve - shouldn't be hard to do and you have a dremel :)

The bolt knob cover is a simple idea but I didn't like the feel of those either so went with threading for a conventional knob.

I hope things are shooting well for you. Except for mag capacity, and of course removal, you could take that to a PRS/Tactical match and have a lot of fun. As long as the scope tracks, have at it.

In time, I expect PRS shooters to go to slimmer and slimmer barrel contours to improve balance and portability. You have something that works right now...kind of leading edge....

Enjoy...

And here is the joy of modern CNC machining and actually watching manf tolerances.

For S&G, I took the bolt out of my 308 and stuffed it into my 243.... fit and functioned the same.

The best part, HEADSPACE is identical... and I do mean identical.

I now have a spare complete bolt as back up... Got a pretty darn big stupid smile on my face right now.

And yes, the bolts will go the other way and headspace the same. Two rifles and the bolts interchange.... all at $375 per rifle

NOTE: FOR SAFETY REASONS, DO NOT SWAP BOLTS WITHOUT PROPERLY CHECKING HEADSPACE. My experience may not be the norm so be careful.

At this point, the only thing holding me back is whether or not I can get a prefit barrel without too much effort. I drive by WSS every day. Maybe I'll go have a look tomorrow.

365 @ WSS online, plus a 40 mail in rebate. That's hella cheap.

Reliable has it for 439.99, and includes a 3x9-40mm scope... which is still cheap!

just a quick question I tried that rebate on a sps in 300 ultra mag just before Xmas and was informed that the rebate was USA only? wondering if it was possibly different ?

Use the Cdn specific rebate form.. I just got my first rebate.

Hopefully, #2 will be coming in a week or two.

Cdn Tire also has them on sale... I think Rem is just trying to flood the market to drown out the Savage, Ruger, Win, Marlin, etc competitors.

A good thing cause the more in circulation, the better we can get the aftermarket onboard with more goodies.

When they have a sale on, Milarm prices are good, I got a 300WM and a .308 for just around $300 one had a scope, and yes the scopes are crap but for an extra $14. I got a scope and rings that are fine for a .22 etc. I already had a 7mm rem magnum and got the rebate, now waiting for the rebates for these! Out of the box, they are great for hunting and get 1 MOA with federal blue box and 60 year old eyes! I would get a .223 if they came up for that price, either way I will be following your progress and will adopt a lot of your changes, I will wait a bit to see if they can get a mag and stock to marry up without tweaking!
