Rem 783 PRS/Tactical Rifle Build - McGowen Making Prefits Now

Looks like a couple of barrel manufacturers already do the 783 pre-fits... some googling showed Criteron and PacNor in the US are making them.

I reached out to Shilen so we will see what happens. Pardon my ignorance but are we able to order barrels from the USA or does it have to go through an importer like Mystic or IRUNGUNS? Paperwork heavy?

Needs to go through an importer, I had Prophet River import a few barrel blanks for me. A bit of paper work, nothing crazy. It is all on their website.
it is 50$ per barrel plus actual shipping.
I had 3 barrels come in the shipping wasn't bad either. Not the fastest process in the world but it wasn't too bad.

Thanks for contacting Shilen.. Also give McGowen a shout.

I am a dealer for both so import is a no brainer... no addn costs, no addn paperwork, no extra delays.

And as a dealer, I receive full manufacturer warranty support. Something to consider if buying "off the street"

^^ Do you have an email for McGowen? They have nothing on their site and I am trying to avoid a conversation mainly because I don't know what the hell I'm talking about ;)

On savage shooters they say the the savage barrel is the same thread pitch and tendon and the 783 bolt face is recessed 10 thousands so you would have to take 10 thousands off the chamber end of barrel so you could head space it properly.

This is very interesting.....going to throw a few questions out there not sure anyone has the answer.
Will it work with AW magazines?
How easy is it to change the bolt head (thinking switch barrel)?
Will it work with a WSM/SAUM case?

My measurements in front of the barrel nut suggest, the thread is larger and this is a very good thing

I really not sure why they bothered with the recess on the breech face.... Likely so they can call it a "different" barrel. But if the dimension of the bolt require it, easy enough to manf. Not thinking it is important???

Bolt head swaps are no different then with a Savage... PTG is making parts. But these have had issues in the past so...

Not sure where you could get the other factory parts to finish so that is still a pain.

No idea on AW mags... don't use them, don't have any to test.

Being a two lug bolt, I don't see it working well with AW mags. Even if the bottom of the receiver is wide enough for the double stack mags, they were designed for a bolt that has a wide lug facing straight down when the action is open. The outside edges of that lug then push the staggered cartridges forward as the rounds alternate left and right while feeding.

The new GAP Tempest action was specifically built to use these mags and uses a 3 lug bolt like the original.

Just noticed that PT&G is offering custom M783 bolts - that suggests that these are gaining recognition...

I've had a couple of 783's show up (hunter / factory / sporter barrels) at my ORA PR matches back in 2014 and I was impressed how they shot so well at 600 and beyond. They sure were great. Mind you they warmed up at the 800 yard distance and were a bit goofy, but hey, WTH? What the heck? Nothing wrong with that!

All great fun. Jerry, thanks for sharing! And also addicting us further! LOL :)

For a factory barrel, I have been pleasantly surprised at how mine has shot. I think Rem has addressed a bunch of QC issues with their new factory. The 783's are put together as well or better then their Rem 700's. Likely all will get better as they move all production under that one very large roof.

Glad other shooters are seeing positive results with the 783. I wonder the issues at 800m were releated to using a bullet too heavy for the factory twist rates?

With the slow down in AR bits and pieces, the aftermarket is searching for another place to develop more goodies. With the Rem promotion and rebates, I suspect a bunch of these have entered into circulation in the last 6 months. That will be good as shooters look to personalise their toys.

Given the very short time this rifles has been in service, there are already a few aftermarket options and the companies I have talked to, certainly have this action on their radar.

Bug them all and hopefully, the combined interest in NA will push more into the ring.
