Rem 783 - Some Range Testing - post 18

seems ok, but maybe I will pare a coil or two off with a dremel cutoff wheel. I don't remember talking about cutting it when we talked earlier, but then maybe I just forgot about that part of the discussion.

Jerry, how would you predict the behavior of a cut down 28 pounder?

Heavier bolt lift... more snap on the firing pin then necessary.. maybe does no harm... maybe it starts to peen things up.

NO idea, and not going to find out as the 24lbs works so well and pretty much feels like the factory bolt lift... smooth and easy. Accuracy is consistently superb so leaving things alone.

Did a few tweaks to the DBM and am very happy with how it is feeding now.

Closed bolt and empty chamber. 10 dummy cases in an MDT mag (yes they do fit 10rds) locked in place. Yes, they will fit if the mag well is relieved a bit.. simple to do.

This is my 2nd action which is not as smooth as my first. It will still cycle as fast as I can move.... with the bobble, still 7 secs to empty the mag.

Really liking this set up. Will get going on more accuracy tests when the weather cools and the rains come.

The range has finally opened up and got a chance to test my new CarbonSix prefit.

Light gusty winds and I only have a STAC3-16 at 16X so aiming error is higher then when I am using my 10-50 target scopes. however, the barrel definitely is shooting great. With limited testing, I have already seen 1/4 to 1/3 MOA groups at 250 and 280yds.

The action continues to run great.. feeding, ignition and extraction/ejection is positive and smooth. I am running near max loads and the fired cases look great and no primer cratering (firing pin spring is plenty heavy enough).

Will continue to tweak the loads a bit and add other bullets .... As a factory donor, still the best option in my books for options, costs and ease of use. The Tikka is pretty darn close and if prefits start to be a thing, this argument will be tougher.

Rifle is shooting good, feeds, extracts and ejects, scope tracks, really no reason you can't come out and shoot the prs matches next season, I'd like to see it in action.

That would be great to try... maybe next Sept as I am commited to F class matches till Aug.

Wasn't there an AB match in Sept????

Love to get the course of fire and info on dates... maybe too early but info would be nice.

There were 7 matches in Alberta this year and Got Your 6 which is mostly PRS but had some other stuff too. First one in May and the last one was a week ago.

Any past course of fires available to view?

My hope is to try one of these in Sept... my year is booked with more F class R&D and competitions until July at least. I think a PRS type match in Sept would be awesome.

Jerry

Taber, AB in Sept...10 hr drive .... let's see if I can make this happen. 2 day match? there is no match info so I am only guessing.

Lots of ppl drive 10 hours and more to get to our matches, we've never made our cof booklets public, so unless somebody has one they want to share you might be sol. All I can say is know your dope out to a grand and practice getting off your belly to shoot, time yourself and don't be scared to heat up a barrel.

There's also plenty of PRS matches South of him in Washington and area...

Come on... really?????

How many F class matches do you guys get to a season? 1 ... none. I bet I have been to more then you guys have this season... and ironically, most of them are in WASHINGTON.

Hey, guess what, Kamloops is going to have a really nice event end of Oct... all 900yds. I guess all of you will be coming out...... My entry is in.... wanna join me?

Sorry that you feel only those that compete at the matches you attend, would know anything about how a mag fed rifle can be put together, tuned and shot.

Run and gun has never been my thing. But my interest is stirred and there are new skills to learn..... and that is positional shooting on the clock.

So I don't criticise your background and your experience based on the matches you don't get to... don't criticise mine. There is always great stuff to learn from all shooting sports.

Can I do gymnastics with a rifle as good as the young bucks? doubt it... but it will be fun to learn.

Jerry

I don't think anyone is questioning your shooting skills. Nor do I think PRS is the "be all end all" shooting discipline that some people make it out to be.

However, it's annoying when people dole out advice for shooting disciplines that they have no experience in, or talk about attending PRS matches for years and never attending (all the while making excuses not to go).

This whole thread is based on a Remington 783 "PRS" build, i for one want to see it run in a prs match, maybe it shoots as good as the full customs that are very regular at our matches maybe be it can't, only one way to find out. As far as me attending an f class shoot anywhere it's probably not gonna happen I'm not interested in f class, I shoot some benchrest varmint for score and that's about it. All cards on the table Jerry you claim that this rifle is a prs build, it may shoot good off a bench or laying on your belly but let's see what it can do off a tire swing or a roof top or a prs barricade. I'd love to see it done with a mpod too. I'm not doubting your ability to lay down and shoot 900 yard groups but in all honesty that's not gonna help you in these matches.
