If you use the search function and look up the Rem 870, you'll see an awful lot of great feedback. My carry every day bush gun has been an 870 Sportsman, which is the 80's equivalent of an Express. Gone through a lot of rough use over the past 3 summers with very bad maintenance on my part...but never ever failed to perform, ever.

What I would recommend is getting an older 870 here on the EE...might take a little more ground work, but you'll probably find a better gun for cheaper. Really hate to say it, but a few too many trustworthy folk have been very unhappy with the workmanship of new remingtons...hold old and new together, and they simply don't compare (finish, fitting, attachments...even heard some complaints about alignment and the sights having fallen off when first opening the box...)

X2!!!

I bought a Brand Spanking New 870 Super Magnun Express (Combo package with Rifled barrel as well as the Vent rib) 16 months ago. Rifled barrel works great on the action, but the vent rib barrel has issues. Seems that, at a completely random rate, the spent shell decides it wants to stay in the barrel. It takes a good whack of the stock on my knee to jar it loose. It doesn't matter if I use good ammo, or crappy ammo.

My friend who has a 1980's 870 has never had a single issue with it, and had bought it used out of the local community paper. He loves to razz me that his 25 year old gun works better than my new one. He's right though because mine is made to less stricter standards, and from cheaper parts.

Just my 2 cents.

Have a look at the Mossberg 500 as well. It might be a bit cheaper, but is as good as an 870. Same aftermarket stuff is available too.

What will you be using it for?If your looking for a bush/truck gun then maybe a Norinco 870 clone with the 14 inch barel. They are reasonably priced and parts are interchaneable with the Remingtons 870.

Norinco HP9-1 (can use longer Remington barrels)

Disclamer: The photo was for entertainment/educational purposes only, this is always how it is stored, it is also fully loaded with one in the chamber as pictures depict, and the registration card was burned.(If you took this seriously....seek help)

Stick with the 870 .... over 9 million produced.
Lot's of accessories, easy to find parts ( IF you need them)
and very reliable.

Mine's an older version Express (late 80's) and it's never skipped a beat.
Probably something in the order of 20,000 rounds through it.
It's been through rain, sleet, snow, hot, cold, dry and humid, including
several stints around sla####er mangrove estuaries. It's taken
deer, ducks, geese, quail, doves, grouse, snipe, woodcock and
pheasants, all without a hiccup.

Keep it clean, and a thin coat of oil on the outside metal,
something like G96 or Break Free CLP.

First suspicion re: those with extraction problems -
may have not been maintained well enough and/or
"been put away wet" resulting in a rusted/corroded chamber.

Almost any gunsmith can put one right with a minimum of fuss
IF there's a problem, and Remington has a very extensive
network of warranty repair gunsmiths.

Would you buy a Chinese car ???

I was talking to a gunsmith this past week and he was telling me how much of a POS the mossberg is.

I wouldn't know since I don't have one but... just thought I'd pass the message along.

As far as the original post goes, I have a 870 and I love it. Buy one off the EE if you want to save a few bucks.

Remy 870 is the way to go, just stay away from those Walmart bulk ammo packs, they create feeding issues due to cheap materials.

my "crappy" mossberg eats them up along with every thing else iv stuck in it. even a cut up stepped on oval shell:D

remington or mossberg your sure to be happy. just the mossberg i think has a better saftey.

Don't get those chinese copies. Get the real REM 870. You will never regret it. Or better yet get used one form the EE and save $$$

From what I have seen my Chinese copy of the 870 is equal to if not better quality then the original 870 at a much lower price.

These days buy an original Remmy shotgun, and you are buying the name only...oh and the cheap excuse for an anti jam system, which can be copied with a dremel.

Also don't rule out the Mossberg Maverick 88, it's a hell of a shotgun for the price...Also it has an open lift plate which is a better anti jam system.

I have always loved my super express 870,its reliable and versatile. In a pinch Im sure it could also serve as a baseball bat or a canoe paddle.I highly reccomend it. Stay away from a new 1100 tho.

Mine did that too. At the very base of the barrel the edge was formed into a bit of a lip. 5 minutes with some fine grit sand paper and oil resolved the issue.

Hit the nail right on the head with that Chinese copy statement.
