REM arms discontinue 870 Express and Wingmaster!

This just solidifies what I was getting at, they don’t really break all that much, parts wear out more than anything. I’ve yet to have a broken part on an 870, yes I’ve replaced parts (extractor, safety, follower/spring, stock sets) but always because I wanted to. Never because I had to, any take off part is still like new and in my parts stash. The flexitab is the same as I look at it, nice upgrade from the old setup but not an issue on the one gun I own that has it.

I agree that they rarely break. My only point was that if they do then there are currently no parts available to fix them. Of course it’s only a matter of time before RemArms is able to start supplying parts again. I look forward to it so I can fix up that poor abused shotgun.

Only time will tell if this is a good strategy. There will always be people looking for a cheap yet rugged shotgun. The Express filled that role and I would imagine that those sales contributed far more to the bottom line than the nicer Wingmaster.

I have an Express and it must be a good one because I have no complaints.

I had a 1957 Wingmaster and sold it because I wanted a three-inch gun with variable chokes.

A friend has a near-new Wingmaster he doesn't use I should talk him into selling me, but I'd probably beat the crap out if it with my hunting style.

I have one, 50s Wingmaster. Ejector spring is broken. It was previously “repaired” by some ham fisted brute that didn’t peen the rivets properly and the ejector is also loose. Can’t find the rivets or the spring to do the repair. Ejector is OK I think but wouldn’t mind swapping it out to 3” since it needs be repaired anyway.

What about those with pre Flexitab guns that want to upgrade? No parts.

No need to swap ejectors you can mill the high spot on the ejector a 1/4 of a inch to make it three inch no need to remove ejector you can pry off the broken spring replace and peen the original rivets better done with proper staking tools.. Do it all the time the spring is the same for 2 3/4 and 3 inch but as you stated are not readily available lately .

Yes of course it’s 2 different guns, can even see the wood grain is different on gun in first 2 pics….if my memory serves me correct the first 2 pics were actual Remington promo pics they released when gun was announced, so very likely that was a pre-production gun possibly without the production stamping. I saw those same pics used on many dealer sites when the gun was listed for sale. The remaining pics look to be the actual gun that was sold.
Very common for dealers to use factory supplied file photos when listing guns.

If that first pic is a new gun and promo pics I will eat it. Rem pics normally state so on the bottom also. Look at the wear marks on the mag tube from pumping
At one time it was was easy to see their pics but that site is long gone now :(

The 870 was first made in 1950... I graduated from gunsmithing school in 1967 and started my career. In 1968 I was doing repairs on shotguns and Model 12's were very common. I quickly found out how complicated that mechanism is. If one wants the trigger more crisp and lighter it can be done but that also may require work on the safety and on the disconnector. If a part had to be replaced it usually required fitting and then of course other parts that linked to it required adjustment. The Model 12 was a fine old shotgun in it's day but the 870 sure showed how simple and reliable a 'modern' shotgun could be. All the parts in a 1950 870 action are completely interchangeable with the parts in an 870 action over 70 years later with no fitting required. So simple and reliable. It seldom required repair. I have a friend who bought one in 1952 and hunted a lot for 40 years with it and has only required a recoil pad and cleaning. Pump action shooters should hope the old 870 remains in production in some form...

Well said
Cheers

Seriously?? You don’t think promo guns get handed around and have the actions worked by people? Do some research on these guns, like I said there’s lots of info out there on these….it’s obvious you won’t believe anything except your own opinion so nothing more for me to say here

Never said they don't get handled but you think that wear shown is from normal handling I don't
It is Ok for us not to agree. If it is from promo handling not one I would have added to my collection nor would you from what I have seen you have shared here over the years you own
Since remington is gone all we have is opinions now also. Plus there is a difference between opinion and fact
Just glad I was smart enough to stash a pile of 870 wingmasters and parts from the pre 1987 years since IMO they will never be seen again in that quality of firearm
Take care

So, I just heard from a Remington expert that my barrel on my 200th Anniversary Limited Edition 870 is an aftermarket barrel. It seems there was an issue with the original barrel. The dealer did cut that barrel down to 26 inches ... then had to re-solder the vent rib of course .... had to thread it for Remchokes again ... did a gold inlay at the muzzle .... and engraved "1 of 2016" with the right font on the barrel ... and re-blued and polished the whole thing.

IMPRESSIVE!

Like I said enjoy and shoot your new 870 and hope that new BS barrel works out since you won't find another right now anywhere. Also do you not own an old 1100. My god according to spank that thing will blow up any day now
A smart man would not blow up a bridge he may need someday
How is that TSS reloading going for you have not heard anything in quite a while like 2 1/2 months.

Cheers

I have a Remington Express from the early 90s which has been a great shotgun for me. Good on the new Remington for simplifying their offer. Sounds like they are focusing on a utility shotgun of improved quality. Hopefully this works out for them.

I think we are all suffering from Turdo Covid long winter syndrome . Hope everyone is well and enjoy your guns.

We sure are. How can one not be. Two girls on the front line since day one and exhausted and even though they say it is almost over more people we know in the past 4 months than the entire two years sick or died from it and then I get but what do you expect they were all old and over 60. My god guess 60 is real old . Friend yesterday 72 lasted one week in hospital and very healthy prior
take care

If you can reuse the spring but can’t find rivets look into having someone turn some on a lathe, it would be hard especially if you could pull the old out for measurements. It’s probably mild steel so it will peen easily.

Ummmm…hmmmm…seems like a lot of work to go through for a dealer, even doing the gold inlay and getting the exact font engraved, seems like the work alone would cost as much as the gun. Who might this ‘expert’ be?
Not saying it can’t happen, but curious as to the expert and his source of info
