Looking on the remington website it would appear that they have dropped the blued/walnut mountain rifle. I can only see the stainless laminate on there. Sad to see Remington drop such a classic looking rifle

Agreed. However, I lost interest in it years ago when they went to that stupid detachable mag. At least the LSS stainless MR is still available, even offered in 280 for 2007! May just have to grab one of those when they become available.

At least ours was beat up a bit, would like to know where it lives today however. I still give our friend schite over selling it without letting me know. To Corlane's of all places, of course it was gone when I called, probably in Tim's locker.

Buddy had one without the detachable mag years back when they first came out. It was in .308 Win. Man did it shoot. I prefer the 'clean' looks of the ones without the detachable magazine, too.

Remington Mountain rifle
I have 2 of the floorplate models,both .280's(although 1 will be a .280AI by next season!).They are the family's go to guns,my wife took a nice whitetail with hers this season,while I took a mulie and a whitetail with mine.Wouldn't trade them for anything,and I'd probably buy another if I could find a good one! Mur.

My 7x57 Mountain Rifle loaded with 50 grains of H4350 under a 140 grain Nosler Partition gets 2825 fps, I think that's enough for any sheep. 52 grains gives a better fill in the case and probably get close to 3000 fps.
I'm a big fan of the mountain rifle configuration, though the DM is an abomination.
I think on the long action the 280 and the 30-06 are the most practical chamberings, the 7x57 gives up some speed and offers little if anything over the 7-08 in the short action. With remington offering the LSS mtn in 280 for 2007 that makes for a very nice practical hunting package.
Just sold a very accurate 280 to my nephew, only because he's my nephew and a good kid. In a Ti stock it weighs 7lb 1ounce with Talleys and a 3.5x10 leupold and is steadily under an inch with 140 clocking close to 3100. That's almost 300 fps over the 7x57 I had (glad you like it John) and kick was comparable to me.
I've got a 260 mtn stainless in a Ti stock that goes 6lb 8oz with Talleys and a vxll 2x7. Very handy little package!
After having a few mtn rifles and featherweights I'm hard pressed to carry anything over 8lbs all up.

I have had a Rem 700 Mountain rifle in 280 Rem for about 13-14 years now.
I replaced the wood stock with a Rem plastic one painted the stock up with my favorite textured spray paints and with 3/4" or less groups @ 100 yards with just about any load I put thru it I am one happy camper....
