You misunderstand .... While I do use Talleys and VXIIIs, I don't think they are the ONLY scope/ring combo out there, as some would. I was poking fun at those folks :)

want me to take a picture of my Burris scope clamped in CZ rings? :D

.................Sorry Paul, i knew you were referring to the "Talley Twins":D

I am getting about 3500 fps with my 26 inch savage, not sure what the weatherby will get but 3500 shoots awful flat out to 700 meters!!!!!100 GR Bullet, not 120 mind you.

good choice Mark...the Vanguards are great rifles...I've owned a few.

don't worry about the "short" 24" barrel...last summer I personally fired a 24" Vanguard 257 over my chrony...the 100gr Barnes XLC went 3648...that's faster than any 25-06....I was told the powder was Rel22...don't know how much of it....

Yes you can certainly form 257wby brass from 7mmremmag brass but watch the neck thickness. If the chamber throat on your rifle is on the tight side, you could have problems like I had with the custom barrel on my own 257wby.

............thanks for the tip!!!!

Also the 7mag brass weighs 20grs more than weatherby mag brass so don't load the same for both kinds.Max loads in 7 or 264 mag brass make old Roys advertising look slow.I also shoot a Vanguard in 257 and I like it a lot.

Lots of Jealousy Posts... don't let them hack on you Mark... that's my job.;)
That is a nice rifle in any caliber and I am a huge fan of the .257WBY.
Try the 110 grain accubonds... they are awesome in that beast and that barrel length.

.......Hey BR in all honesty i have no experience with shooting game with a caliber under 30. The flat shooting of this caliber has intrigued me. A fella at work tells me this caliber drops deer hard and he has some nice mounts to his credit not all taken with the .257 mind you, but he sure respects this caliber's usefulness in the scheme of his other magnums and bigger calibers.
We'll see. I am down to three levers and am broadening my horizons and trying not to be so narrow minded about trying other calibers.

Hornady makes a nice 117 grain round nose, it'd be worth a long hard look

there is a lack of consistency in load data for the 257. i formed some winchester 7mm brass, my necks are .283. lyman 47th says .281, hornady 4th says .283, speer 13 says .285. i got concerned my brass wouldn't chamber so i put a loaded round in by hand, it chambered and drops out in its own. thats good.

i am using H1000, i checked a 2003 hogdon manual i have which says 71 grain max load. the hogdon site says 73 grain minimun and 77 grain max. does anyone have any experience with this powder in the 257. oh ya, thats for 100 gr bullet.

Forming 7mm Remington to 257 Weatherby

Win94,

Have done this a number of times, all shot and functioned okay in my Vanguard.

Use new unfired brass only, run through 257 Wby sizing die, ensure you have a slight resistance when closing bolt on empty case, fireform with a low end load from one of the manual's. Shoulder should then be fully formed.

WHY ? The case headspaces on the belt for initial fireforming trip.Use low end load to start because of thicker brass.
