I have an old Remington 12-A pump action .22 that my father gave me. The hammer doesn't seem to have enough snap to fire a round. I took it apart and cleaned it really well and it fired 5 times in a row and then misfired. The rounds are not defective because I took the misfired ones and fired them in another .22. It leaves a mark on the rim that looks the same as a fired round, just not hard enough to maske it go bang I guess. I'm thinking something to do with the hammer spring being weak. This gun has fired thousands of rounds in its day.
Any help or observations would be appreciated.

When you took it apart, is it possible the mainspring strut was put back in upside down? This would slow down the movement of the hammer.
You could try another mainspring, as well as checking the firing pin for condition and protrusion.

You know, my cousin got one of those from our great uncle when he died, and it just always misfired once every 6 or 8 shots. We cleaned it up and everything but it was a problem we could never solve. THose rifles might just go south after 30 years of use.

New firing pins are listed at BROWNELLS ( www.brownells.com ) for $13.95 us. There is 2 styles flat FOR MODEL 12 and round FOR LATER 12'S AND 121'S. Now the problem is "IF" BOWNELL'S CAN SENT ONE TO YOU AND ALL YOU CAN DO IS ASK.
