I was fliping through an old rifle magazine and came across an artical on the Remington 40-xs tactical rifle. I gues this rifle is a pretty straight shooter, does anyone know if it is available to the civillian market??..thanks

The 40-X rifles come out of Remington's custom shop. The 40-XB 'Tactical'(the XS is one of their LEO rifles and aren't reaily available nor cheap.) has a MSRP of $2665US. It'd be a special order, requiring you to pay up front, and will take time(likely measured in months) to get.
Oh and 'tactical' is a marketing term.

I have handled one of these fine rifles in the US, it is very expensive and the wait would be more then the posted time if they woudl even ship to Canada. A riend of mine inquired about oen and Nichols told the gunshop they cannot bring that model in the country. Another one of those rumer mill stigma's attached to certain rifles. Get one of the fine rifle buildiers up here to build you one just like it if that is what you are looking for.

Get a regular 40X. They shoot just as good. You can always shorten the bbl down to 24" if that is what you need. I've got a 40X in 308 and it shoots as good if not better than the 40-XS. They may start out as (with hand picking) 700 actions, but end up to be very nice shooters after work in the Custom Shop. I know I like mine. Just my 2c worth.

The 40x rifle takes more like 18 months to get and the price isn't cheap. But you can order bbl length and "twist" and they will make it.

Hi Russelld I owned 40x Remington's there action in the single shot version is a stiffer action than the Reg 700 there barrels where moly & stainless, and I beleive they where hand lapped like the custom guys do.here is some info for you

if your thinking of buying a Remington I would suggest you look at the Remington XCR Tactical available in .223,.308 and 300wm 416 stainless fluted barrel, with a nice B&C stock repeater action There is one at Epp's in .308 and other stores in Canada about $1300 I have one in .223 Rem not shot it yet, just loading some shells for it. This to me is as close to a cutom built gun you can get and maybe best bang for the $

There's definately a certain "mystique" about the 40x. Much like the R5 milspec only more so. Some of the 40x rifles I've seen have been beautiful (non tactical ones). I'd love to own one some day.

The XCR doesn't really compare. I'd say the M24 was closer to being the type of status symbol that the 40x is.

If you just want a nice target shooter, I'd consider the Remington XR-100. It's a very nice rifle for a reasonable price. But it probably won't turn heads like a 40x :D.

Then there is the R5-milspec, the XCR and the M24.

For a tactical style bolt action rifle, I'd also consider looking at the TRG22.
