Most bases are covered anyway, my first suggestion would have been the "magazine" cap: There are three holes in the end, all three are open when set on "H", while only a single hole remains open when set on "L". Apparently it isn't something simple that was overlooked.

These are nice guns, tastefully engraved receivers, nice wood. The one I've shot has yet to give me any grief, but I didn't have it cut off. It's your gun but {shudders}, they don't make these anymore...

The 58 has been obsolete for 40 years but the problem is the short barrel. The gas ports will have to be drilled larger in order for enough gas to operate the action... it should be done a little at a time until it functions correctly. Have a gunsmith do it, supply a box of shells. If it is drilled too large the action will suffer from slamming too hard.

Probally is , I agree but I would not drill until I was sure is it clean and assembled corerctly. There is a guy on another forum with a 18" barrel working and he says no redrilling BUT maybe someone did drill prior to him owning it
