I'm looking to buy a Remington 597 in 22LR, but it seems everywhere I call they tell me they don't carry these guns because they cause problems. Now I realize that they have plastic feeder lips on the mags, but does this problem outweigh the better accuracy the gun gives you over the ruger 10/22?
There are 10 shot mags available with steel lips, but 10 shots just isn't enough for me.:ar15: The gun would be mainly used for plinking at the range 2 or 3 times a month with maybe 200 rounds through it each time out. How long would the mags last at this rate?

IMHO it doesn't. Several modifications can be made to the 10/22 to make them more accurate, and the 597 feeding problems were enough to drive me nuts.

Although, I should probably mention that the 10/22 can have feeding/extraction issues as well when rapid firing.

Cheers

I'm also curious about the longevity of the hi-cap 597 mags...;)

I bought 6 30 round magazines for the 597 when they first came out from Eagle International. About 17 Federal Bulk 550 round packs later, I have 5 of the magazines left. One I dropped and cracked the feed lips, it lasted another 500 rounds of so before they finally broke off and I tossed the magazine. I am quite impressed with the durability! I always load the mags to 32 rounds...

The reason I am looking at the Remmy is the price difference between it and the Ruger. I am from southern ontario and the cheapest 10/22 I can find is in Toronto for $238, I can get a Remmy for $185. I don't plan on modifying the gun at all, just leaving it bare bones, so the amount of aftermarket parts really doesn't matter to me.
Here is a list of stores I've looked at for them. I'm trying to stay within an hour to and hour and a half of Stratford. Let me know if I'm missing any

-Shooterschoice (Waterloo)
-Al Flaherty's (Toronto)
-Gobles (London & Tillsonburg)
-Onatrio Gun Services (Clinton)
-Eli's Guns and Archery (Simcoe)
-Le Baron (Mississauga)
-Lovett's Gun Centre (Kitchener)
-Bass Pro Shops (Vaughn)
-CK Gun Room (London)

I like the 597, I prefer it over my 10/22. I don't have any accuracy problems with it. The only problem was the ejector. That was easily fixed.

The standard 10 round mags are metal lips, the 30 round mags are plastic lips.
There is a project underway that is going to produce metal 597 mags in the UK.
However, there is no set relase date yet.

INTIMIDATOR- You need to check out SIR mailorder (Cabelas Canada), and Wholesale Sports. Cabelas lists the 597 for$169.99 (order # 460524) and the 10-22 for$229.99 (order #460160).

CCI Blazer works all the time with best bang for the $ and also Federal American Eagle works good if you cant get any Blazer but some times you have issues with not enough recoil to properly eject spent casing. As for the durability of the plastic mags, Remington dealer "Reliable Gun" has given me new mags for my 2 returned ones. One mag gave up after on day my girlfriend decided to put 3000 rounds in 4 hours and the other one gave up after I left it out in the rain for 5 days and it rusted out the spring inside of the mag. Since then and also reducing the amount my girlfriend shoots in one day cuz I told her I am not reloading any mags for her anymore. I haven't yet had a failure. P.S. Any 597 out of the box will shoot a minute of squirrel all day long as for a 10/22 I hope you like buying a lot of after market stuff just to get the same quality.

A side note. Anyone ever try to feed these pigs a fabric 22LR belt. I just wonder if it would cycle properly???
Hmm...

I've gone through 2k+ rounds on my 597, no issues so far. I've fed it all kinds of low cost ammo (mostly lead) and it ate it all up. I have one of the plastic high cap mags and it seems to be feeding better than the factory mag.

I like my 597 but it jams all the time don't matter what kind of ammo i use still jams But my 10/22 i never had a problem with it
