Remington 597 ammo feed problem vs. accuracy

The reason I am looking at the Remmy is the price difference between it and the Ruger. I am from southern ontario and the cheapest 10/22 I can find is in Toronto for $238, I can get a Remmy for $185. I don't plan on modifying the gun at all, just leaving it bare bones, so the amount of aftermarket parts really doesn't matter to me.
Here is a list of stores I've looked at for them. I'm trying to stay within an hour to and hour and a half of Stratford. Let me know if I'm missing any

-Shooterschoice (Waterloo)
-Al Flaherty's (Toronto)
-Gobles (London & Tillsonburg)
-Onatrio Gun Services (Clinton)
-Eli's Guns and Archery (Simcoe)
-Le Baron (Mississauga)
-Lovett's Gun Centre (Kitchener)
-Bass Pro Shops (Vaughn)
-CK Gun Room (London)

ahh and 185 is really good price for 597 is that new or used?.i have seen them for 299 new .and scoped issue on special for 289.
and they are as accurate as 10/22. had both. just found 597 cheaper and more comfortable out of the box.(personal choice)just make sure it has aluminum mag. anything plastic is junk.

I'm looking to buy a Remington 597 in 22LR, but it seems everywhere I call they tell me they don't carry these guns because they cause problems.

To be honest, I've never heard this before.

I see them in stock at Bass Pro in Vaughn whenever I'm there. They might just be out of them after the holiday season. Sometimes they have them on sale for $150, so they might just be temporarily out of stock. Why don't you try SIR mailorder (IE: Cabelas Canada)? They should have them around the $200 mark.

I've put about 3 bricks worth of ammo through mine so far with no issues at all. My 597 really likes the CCI Blazers, as well as Winchester Dynapoints. I own 4 hi-cap mags for the 597 and I don't have too many problems with them, though I usually stick to the metal 10 rounders when shooting from the bench or prone because they stay out of the way. It's a shame the hi-cap mags aren't double stacked.

I have both. I prefer the 10/22.

My 597 feeds well, but.. only 2 of the 4 mags work with it. Also it is extremely ammo sensitive. It was shooting one lot of Lapua Superclub exceptionally well. Everything else it shot poorly. Even another lot of Lapua superclub . I don't just mean mediocre either. I mean really bad. 2 inches indoors at 20 yards on a bench with a scope. The stuff it liked was one hole about the diameter of two rounds.

I'll be playing around with it more, when I can get some different types of ammo. Then we'll see what it likes. Overall I like it, except for the mag issues and ammo sensitivity.

How do you find it with Remington ammo? ;)

With the Remington ammo I had, it shot poorly. I tried, Lapua Super club, winchester Super X, American eagle 40 grain solids, AE 38 grain hollow points, Federal Gold 40 grain, Elley, and Remington Target 22 standard velocity.

I should also point out that I don't like the rail with the 597. I'll be replacing it with a Leupold one piece. In all fairness I also replaced the 10/22 one with a Leuupold one piece. However I never really felt that the rail was an issue with the 10/22. With the 597 my gut feeling is it just doesn't seem that great. I don't trust it to not loosen or move. It doesn't feel as stable as even the one on the 10/22 even though everything is tight.

If it doesn't break in, I'll be taking the 597 to a gunsmith to have the crown and barrel checked.

i got about 10k rnds through my 597 and it still out shoots my 1 month old 10/22. I find i have more problems with the 10/22 then the 597. Only down side to the 597 is it takes longer to reload the mags.

I picked up a 597 a few weeks ago and have put about 500 rounds thru it so far. I tried winchester - xperts, Dynapoints, wildcats, CCI blazers & CCI velocitors. The CCI blazers worked the best with 0 jams and the dynapoints were 2nd best (about 1 every 20). The velocitors feed ok but I still got spent shells jamming on me. The blazers, velocitors and dynapoints make one ragged hole at 50 yards about a loonie sized. The only thing done to the gun is polished up hammer and floated barrel.

What did you use to polish the hammer? When I got it home I immediately took it apart to see how it worked and thought that by polishing that part it would improve trigger pull, does it?

I picked up a 597 at Elwood Epps on January 2nd when I was in Barrie. I prolly have about 300 rounds through it now and had a problem with the Winchester Xpert rounds jamming as well as the Remington Yellow Jackets. However i did try the velocitors and they seemed to work well. The 30rd mags are hard to load, the spring is plenty strong, I ended up with a sore thumb after 200 rds. As far as the grouping goes I really haven't had a day where the wind wasn't a gale force, maybe this week will be better.

Yeah it helps. I used 300 grit wet sandpaper and then 600 grit. I also took a bit off the spacers that go in between the spring and the hammer and polished the sides of the hammer where they touch the spacers. The hammer moves freely now and I only got 1 misfire compared to about 10 the first outing and I shot twice as much. I was going to get the volquartsen hammer but I am going to shoot it once more and decide then.

Between the first and second outing I also floated the barrel and loosened and tightened the rail screws finger tight.

I had the 597 pretty warm from those 30 rounders and I surprisingly I was still getting good groupings....This gun is growing on me !

The 597 was a great gun for me. I noticed talk of plastic mags and the factory mags are not plastic, they are metal with a plastic bottom and follower. The 1st design were plastic though. The 30 rounders are plastic.

Do as EGMike suggested with polishing hammer and resizing the bushings for free hammer movment. The 597 gave excellent accuracy and no feed issues what so ever, and mini mags grouped the best in mine.

i have over 2500 shots out of my 597 and it still works like new , i have the 30rd mags for it also , and they worked ok, after they where worked in..

it now will feed all 30rds out of the gun in 3-4 sec..and not jam with a custom mod (not full auto)

I tried the Velocitors in my gun this morning (-13 or so ) and the grouping at 25m was terrible. I had good groups with the Federal Premiums. I'll do a little more experimenting when its a little warmer outside just to make sure its not the weather thats throwing it off.

Has anyone tried the American Eagle AE5022 in their 597? The specs are the same as the Federal 510's..... Visually I can't tell them apart from the CCI blazers (aside from the mfg stamp on the primer) and are about 8$ cheaper a brick in my area.

I bought a 597 for my son about 9 years ago and it has run flawlessly since then. It likes to be fed Federal 36 gr. Game Shocks, just like my 10/22.

tried out a new 30 round remington brand mag for the 597 yesterday. Rifle has about 2500 rounds though it. shot a brick through the 30 rounder yesterday. one fail to fire and one fail to feed out of the 500 + rounds.

The 30 rounders seem to be made very well and work great. We were shooting clays and gongs at 100 - 150 yards so no idea how it was grouping. Temps were around -12 with a mild cross wind.
