Remington 597 bolt handle?

What I could do is send out the prototype handle for only the shipping cost. No guarantees on it and if it doesn't fit to your satisfaction, pass it on to the next interested party. It should fit somebody's bolt well. That's all I can offer at the moment unless you're willing to be patient with me.

I don't even have a Remington 597, yet I want to buy one!......:)

It always amazes me the talent that you machinist type fellows have, along with the gun-smiths out there......:):D

I've got to admit, you had me at insertion.........:):ROFLMAO::LOL::ROFLMAO:

I'll be looking for a 22 HMR in Remington 597 at our gun show in April.:love:

Keep up the great work Mr. Leuchtkafer!.....:)

Apologies for the delay, life... you all understand. Good progress was made on prototype V2 and it could be sent out soon after a few finishing touches if anyone wants it.

This brings me to a crossroads on design, please see short video. It's regarding fitment and bolt tolerances versus the spec I machine to. I can do these to my current spec, and run the risk it's too big for your bolt. I can leave final fitment to you, so you just file it until it fits yours nicely. Or, I can reduce the dimension I machine to on prototype V3 so that it fits both of the bolts I have on hand here, then we'll see if it gets too sloppy in the one bolt. I don't know, whoever want's the yet-to-be-machined handle talk to me about it.

Once I finish these two handles I don't think I will be making any more of these for some time. As I've said, this is a hobby for me and I've got a lot of other things going on right now. At about 6 hours labour per handle, unless you want to pay me $300 for it, it's not really worth my limited free time to do. Maybe next winter if I get bored and just want to machine something for fun, I'd do some more, but I have my own projects I really need to get back to promptly.

So, that's where we're at. I've got a working prototype design, 2 handles up for grabs presently, then future supply in limited runs at some point when I can get around to it. It would be helpful to know who's actually interested in one of these if I were to do another production run of them, because of the setups I have to do on one machine for it, how many parts I need to batch produce is important to workflow. Anywho, let me know.

The two handles are done and they have been spoken for. After all that R&D/prototyping, of course I need to show off the successful end result. I'm pretty pleased with this, it was a good project to take on as far as advancing my machining and designing skills and I'm better for having done it. Unfortunately it's not something I can do on demand for people, too time consuming and I can't sell them at a high enough price to justify spending the time on it. I'll see about doing some more when I'm not being pulled in a hundred different directions, summer is too busy and I need to get caught up on my own projects. That's all for now.

That's beautiful work, right there! I recently acquired a Remington 597 on a blind trade essentially - long story - that I've been converting to a target rifle, with all the (very limited) aftermarket parts that are still available. The Remington 597 lineup was discontinued in 2019, I believe... too bad, as these have a reputation for better accuracy than the 10/22 once you upgrade the extractor to a Volquartsen unit.

Anyway, I did notice on mine that the bolt handle was extremely sloppy, but did not think an aftermarket option was available. I just figured that Remington tolerances were junkand that this was "normal". Yet here I learn that it's actually possible to LOSE the bolt handle while firing, lol. If you ever make more of them, that would be extremely interesting.

An observation : The OEM bolt handle is very lightweight. Is this upgraded version heavier and, if so, did you test the rifle for cycling function when fired? With small caliber blowback actions, bolt weight is often crucial for proper function.

Once again, excellent work and awesome results!

Here's someone who did something very similar in 2013 :

Thanks. The OEM handle I have weighs 10.5 grams, the one I made weighs 19 grams, very little difference. I had it out to the range on the weekend and it cycled fine with SK Semi Auto and SK High Velocity. Yes, I was inspired by that person's work, I just made the handle diameter a little larger.
