Remington 597 is a nice cheap gun with good handling and not bad looking.
After the first 300 rounds or so, I decided to clean it, I took it apart and
found the hammer pin was broken. I called Remington in US which re-direct
the call to Quebec, after we sort out our language discrepancy .... lol....
they told me they didn't have it in stock, the pin is only worth 8 bucks if
they have it they would just ship it to me but since no stock I have to ship
the whole gun to Ellwood .... what a trouble for such little pin, so I made
one out of HSS drill bit after measuring it.

The HSS turned out to be not so good because it was bending after 500 rounds.
Since last night I got to try the VQ stuffs that just came in so I made another
one out of cobalt bit. The cobalt seem to hold very well after 500 rounds but
tomorrow I will get some hardened dowel pins.

The VQ hammer and extractor finally came in the mail after 2 weeks later.
They told me the shipment might take 2 MONTHS ..... WHAT ..... LOL....
Seems like the package was open by custom ....

Looking the design of VQ hammer, there isn't much different than the original
one, even the edge feels the same across my finger but noticeable thicker
than the original but after taking a close up picture then I could see the edges
are not the same and it's actually true that makes the trigger lighter ....
strange ... lol....

Thanks for the info and pics. I wasn't having any problems with my 597, but ordered the VQ hammer and extractor also. I only put 300 DynaPoints and 300 Federal Bulk Classic (the 525rd box stuff) through it so far and all worked well. Should get the new parts some time in the next few weeks.
 
The VQ extractor is something really amazing I have to say, last week
I've been trying all different ammo that would extract properly without any
jamming, the winmag 40 grain, federal 510 load and dyna point, yellow jacket,
stinger, elley, lapua ..... etc...., the only one would work ok and only jammed
once in awhile was the winmag, the rest would jammed at the port almost
every other bullets. After installing the VQ extractor .... holy .... no more
jamming with all the bullets, doesn't matter which one, everyone of them
would extract nicely ..... amazing .....

That is exactly what I saw posted on RimfireCentral.com about the extractor, so I thought I should get one. Now our 597's should digest any ammo without trouble (not that I had any trouble yet anyways). Good to hear you had similar results.:)
 
Before you go out and spend the money on a VQ extractor though, check for a nice sharp straight edge (the part that sits on top of the cartridge rim) along the OEM extractor. The other thing to try is to polish the extractor body itself.

Mine has ate everything I've tried without a single hiccup so far.

If this still doesn't work, buy the VQ.

I found with the stock parts:
1 - Hammer would not fully #### each time
2 - Heavy trigger pull
3 - A few (though not many) FTE
4 - Multi-fire (2 - 3 rnds/trigger pull) :runaway:
Since the mods, she fires through the Eagle 30 rounders with ne'er a hiccup.
I love this gun!
Other than a paint job (just 'cause I can) and maybe a muzzle brake (as before), I probably won't do another thing... other than shoot it and enjoy it!
 
The trigger is definitely much better than before, I wonder if it can be achieved
by modifying the original hammer, perhaps not since the VQ has slightly
different angle to it and a bit different setting where it engage to the sears.
Also it's thicker. The good thing it does better accuracy with lighter trigger.

I took some target shots after putting over 1500 rounds thru the barrel
without cleaning .....

When I first go this gun I loved it, the balance is great and it fied awesome. Although possibly the crappiest magazines I have ever see. they never held all 10 and the rifle jammed after 5 were put in. I put about 300 rounds through it, and then voila the first problem. while sighting in my scope the my triger pull went to about 50 friggen pounds, i could not squeeze a round off. I took it home, field stripped to bare nuts and cleaned it. A small little ring had fallen off inside the trigger assembly. I put it in place, and went back to the range. I fired one magazine and the the charging handle locked back, the HOD was blocking the the bold from closing after I had taken out the magazine. My gunsmith is going to work with it. I would not advise anyone to buy this rifle. Stick with a 10/22(best I rimfire i have had) or a Marlin bolt action.980S
 
I never had any extraction problems with my 597 .22lr but wouldn't mind lightening the trigger pull. I've read that VQ hammer brings the trigger to 2.5-3lbs is that true?
 
I don't have any way to measure it, but the VQ hammer certainly makes a huge difference.
Additionally, the VQ extractor cured all my FTE issues, and now tosses the spent cartriges into a 12" diameter pile about 3' from the bench...

I'll measure mine when I get home and let you know the weight. In any case, it's definitely a worthwhile upgrade, and easy to do. I bought the extractor at the same time but haven't installed it yet, as I've never really had any problems with the stock one. I'm holding onto it in case it ever develops.
 
So I don't know if they are all the same trigger weight, but my VQ trigger is 3.5#, so sayeth the rcbs pull gauge.
 
Sniper22. Thanks so much for this info. I have had troubles with my 597 for years. To the point that I did not want to shoot it anymore. It was
constantly jamming except with Federal ammo. I have ordered this kit and
I am sure it will solve the problem.Thanks again.
