Im looking at taking in a 600 on a trade, supposed to be in good condition although I havent seen it in person yet. Since I have no experience with remington rifles I would gladly take anyones opinion on this old rifle. What would you roughly value one of these at? Anything I should look for when I look it over?
Thanks a lot

Well.... No bolt release was a pain, plastic botton metal was worse, bolt handle feels funny, way to short of a barrl for my likeing. One good thing was it sold fast...... Lol

First confirm if it's a 600 or a Mohawk 600. Does it have a "rib" on the barrel or no ?

They are great rifles. Rugged and accurate. I've modded the hell out of both mine and love them, but all you really need to do is swap the plastic trigger guard with an aluminium after market. Plastic trigger guards can be quite good but the plastic used back then was garbage.

600 is probably a hair more than the Mohawk (from a collectability POV) but typically top dollar would be in the $450 - 500 range ? Less even better. One of mine was $350, other was $400 and that wasn't all that long ago.

Difference of opinion and application.

- bolt release is no big deal at all
- agree, plastic trigger guard MUST be replaced (easy)
- bolt handle doesn't bother me at all
- I really like the short barrel for what I do with it

Besides the plastic trigger guard/bottom cover, there is little wrong with these rifles.
Most are very accurate and quite handy. The short barrel is entirely a matter of what
one likes to carry, and where it will be used.
I have owned them in 308, 6mm, 222, and 243. The 6mm was stupid accurate with
almost anything I shot out of it. The others were all sub-moa rifles.
The bolt release is slightly hokey, but once you get the hang of it....no problem.
If you can buy it for <$500.00 and it is in good shape, it will serve you well.
Dave.

Well it sounds like not a bad rifle, but it certainly wont replace my a-bolt and I dont think its worth a straight trade on a Les Paul. I appreciate the input fellas!

The very short action makes it one of the stiffest/rigid bolt actions and at one time were commonly sleeved by benchrest shooters. Not so much anymore with other better options. The short barrel can be a 'blaster' to some folks. There was a recall done on the trigger which is well publicized on the 'web'....having said all of that...for the experienced hunter who knows he will be carrying a rifle a whole lot more than he will be shooting it...the 600 is among the most handy rifles ever made...

I dunno man, Les Paul's a junk these days. I have A LOT of experience in that field to know. Cost wise there's no way to compare because they are so outrageously over priced !!

Well, if it's a Mohawk and in good shape I'd be interested in purchasing it from you if you decided it isn't your thing.

They're a good rifle. I have a half dozen or so (and three XP100'S, basically a single shot version of the same action), in cartridges raging from 222 to 284 to 308. Good rifles. Brownell used to sell a safety that moved the bolt release to the trigger guard like a 700, and there was a guy in BC that used to make aluminum bottom metal. I can't remember his name, maybe someone else here does. I built a couple of Scout rifles on these, back before you could buy them. I like them. - dan

I never took mine hunting, because I didn't want to fire even one shot with it in 308, without good ear protection.

Gibson should shut their doors, close the whole thing down imo.... but yeah, an Epiphone is more in line dollar wise.

Mine is at least 20 years old (bought it used). Haven't fooled with anything new. I believe my amp took a dump during one of my moves and with having small kids it limits the amount of decibels you can produce after dark.

The newer stuff is garbage. They lighten them with holes all over the place. Search for an x-ray picture. Shocking. The hardware is crappy soft metal that sounds bad and breaks down easily. Parts like nuts are plastic junk vs a well cut bone nut ... etc. etc. I've seen frets in the wrong location throwing pitch off in specific area of the fretboard. Worst yet, I've seen many where the bridge posts are in the wrong location so you can never get it to intonate properly !! The extra 4 dollars for a two way truss rod would solve a lot of their neck problems but no ..... can make a better product !

I've played many nice custom shop Les Paul's for very well known rock stars but the cost of that to the average guy is so far beyond reasonable it's not worth the discussion.

If it's a tube amp it's easy to fix by someone who knows what they're doing. Yup, loud noise after dark with kids certainly gets limited. ... certainly understand that !

Sorry for the derail OP. Maybe there should be a guitar sub-forum on CGN ... LOL...

I actually went ahead with this deal, he sweetened me up with some cash. Sorry its not a mohawk version.

Its in good enough shape but it hasnt been cared for in a few decades and its gonna need some tlc but should be a fun project. Anyone more familiar than I, is the regular model 600 a walnut stock? The finish is quite worn so its hard to tell but I plan on bringing some life back into this. Never saw one before in person and I knew I had to have it. Very small bolt action 308 I plan on taking it out soon.

Excellent Unhinged. Glad you got it. They are great rifles. Once you get it cleaned up you will love how handy it is.

Hi. I have had a Mohawk 600 in 222remington. This is the most accurate rifle I have. I would put it up against any 223 at the range. Yes, the plastic sucks.

Nice ! Have no doubt your .222 is very accurate. I'd like to find one in 6 mm.

Whats a thread without pictures anyways? So Ive got it home and cleaned it up. What strikes me as odd though now that Ive done some more research is that my stock isnt checkered and I cant seem to find another on the internet like it. Any ideas? If I wanted to refinish the stock do you think it would hurt its value?

I had a 600 Mohawk years ago, and it definitely had pressed checkering.
Yours has been sanded off. I can see the remnants on the wrist and forend.
It looks like she's been well used and slightly abused.
