Where is the best/cheapest place to pick up one of these ( I think I like the Varmint version but I have no idea about rifles)? Best I've seen so far is Badger at $649..Thoughts on his piece?

Best and cheap never go together in rifles. You get what you pay for. Basically, get a Rem 700 and hope for the best and prepare for a new custom barrel for real accuracy if the factory one don't shoot.

What I said was the best/cheapest PLACE to buy this rifle. I know cheap stuff inst good and good stuff isnt cheap.

Keep in mind the sps varmint has a 12" twist barrel, which will limit your ammo selection to about 55gr and lighter bullets, they are also really heavy with the 26" heavy barrel. In the entry level 700 both the VTR and the SPS tactical will come with a 9" twist barrel and lighter 22 and 20 barrels, there is a 100$ mail in rebates on the VTR models and 40 on the sps tactical, if you can find one that is. I shoped around quite a bit when i bought my .223 VTR and the prices dont change much, there was about 50$ difference between the cheapest and the priciest. just go with whoever you feel gives you the best service, and factor in that you would spend around 30$ for shipping and you would have to wait for a week before you get it in from an online shop when your shopping localy.

I don't reload, just shoot AE 55gr so ammo won't be an issue, I hate rebates but is a VTR better than an SPS and if so why?

That could be said for any rifle ever made.

The VTR is a complete gimmick and a blight. If you think the Remington Tobleron barrel does it for you, then by all means, however, it offers nothing more than what a SPS has to offer.

Another stupid question... 700 SPS tactical or Stevens 200 with better glass? One is 650 other is 350...Crap, just found a Tikka T3 lite in 223 for $630..now what lol???

As much as I love my 700, I would say Stevens 200. Thats $300 to add to your glass budget.

Personally, I'd still go for the Remington, especially if you want precision and a platform to build on, the 700 action is what most competition actions are designed around, not to mention the many gun smiths that can do wonders on improving the factory action. Hard to beat a trued 700,and finding upgrade parts is easy, ask around.

even compared to the Tikka?

Got a 700 sps tac in 223, the 1 in 9, 20 inch barrel. Got it as a test rifle for the Tac21 chassis. So far I only had a chance to shoot it at 60m for function testing. Rapid 10 shot groups were in the 1 to 1.5 inches, fired about 200 rnds. I love the light recoil and 10 rnd Ai mags are hard to beat. I will be swaping out the barrel for a 1 in 7 twist to shoot the 90 grn bergers, my new rifle for precision/tacrifle shoots. :)
Rem700 are great, just so much you can do to them. One more vote for the Rem 700.
