Seems the 700 is a very popular choice...but what rivals it ?

I really like the synthetic Tikkas but for some reason do not like how they look in wood stock..who makes the best 700 alternative for the same basic price range?

I vote the Tikka. Yes, if you're not into synthetic stocks that sucks, but, on the other hand, the Tikka's come 'accurized' out of the box whereas you spend a lot time and expense tricking out a Rem 700 from stock. I'm sure I'll get arguments from Rem 700 owners on that statement, but there you are.

Everything rivals a Remington... everything!
Never mind the crazy person [BIGREDD].

Remington's are very popular for a reason. They are quite accurate out of the box and can be extemely accurate with tinkering. There is also a multitude of aftermarket stuff to be had for them.

Having said that ........ If I was going to buy a gun and just shoot it as is, out of the box, I would say the Tikka T3 would be the way to go, but not in the ghey 270WSM. They are very accurate and well made/designed rifles.

I hunted with a Ruger Mark 2 Stainless in 260 this year, all in all a nice gun with some inovative ideas. Also Ruger is the only company that I know of that helped finance our fight against gun control. 10 years ago you could not beat the 700, now I am not sure. Rem. fired gunsmiths and hired engineers, seems like quality is droping after this. Leave it to an engineer to screw up something simple and reliable.

How long has Remington been using the same dies for the 700?:(
If I was building a custom I would not use a new Remington action... that is for sure.
The quality of the new Remingtons is questionable in most cases and atrocious in many.:runaway:

I think that for the combination of looks, performance and selection that Rem offers in the 700 line, there is no real comparison. And I own a Win 70 and an A-Bolt, nary a 700. Well, maybe Ruger......
I can't speak to new-rifle quality issues as I seldom handle or shoot new rifles, but I've wanted a Mountain Rifle for years; the only reason I bought my .280 A-Bolt is that no one in Alberta had a .280 Mtn left in stock. I still may get me one in .260 Rem.
My only grievances against Remington are that they haven't pushed the .280 or the .260 hard enough by offering them in more rifles for a longer period of time. Maybe Ruger could teach them something.
Tikka rifles are excellent quality and dollar value IMHO, but they don't offer the selection of models that Rem does, and I don't personally find them as pretty as 700's. I realize that looks shouldn't matter much, but they do to me.

IN order,
Sako, Tikka(the 595/695 series), Kimber, ruger.
that being said there is nothing wrong with a remington if you geta good one. A great source for good remington's is the EE forum here.

I have had three Remington 700s, a 308, 300H&H, and a 243. I have had no issues with them at all. I have also had three Rugers and two Tikka 595s. If I were to buy new bolt gun right now, I would probably buy a Savage in the 14 classic version. However, I would rather get an Encore--one shot, one kill baby!

What exactly does that mean?

If quality is an issue with new Rems, why not use an old one?

Savage - ugly
Browning - over designed jap crap
Tikka - plastic Red Ryder gun
Ruger - sloppy and heavy
Winchester - tits up
Marlin - no bolt actions
weatherby - overpriced
Sako - high price out of reach of most guys

a guy can find a remington to fit any need, from a low cost SPS to a custom shop 40X. they shoot good easy to tune to make even better
